Being new to cigar smoking I have been trying to learn as much as possible about proper technique and helpful suggestions for getting the most enjoyment out of cigar smoking. When looking at reviews and such many include information about things they notice prelight. Some samples are smell, appearance, feel, and that got me to thinking.

What aspects of the prelight inspection tell the most about the quality of a cigar you are about to smoke? What things are key? Also, what rituals do you have that are more personalized (however odd they might be)?

Some people insist that the light process should be done with only cedar strips or wood matches that have burned passed the sulfur complex on the match.

I personally feel the best way is to light the cigar slowly with a butane torch. I always make sure to blow the first full puff on the end of the cigar to make sure the bottom in completely glowing red.

Good luck! :)

I'm sitting here trying to come up with something to surpass cbd's comment. Dammed if I can . ???

You could recommend toasting with flaming dollar bills. Also, some people like to moisten the head by dipping in assorted beverages although, as I understand it, interns named Monica work equally well.

Hahaha! I think that should be Acid's next flavor :p

When I first grab a cigar I usually inspect the wrapper, if its torn or cracked what Ill usually do is wet it down so it seals with the filler. That will usually keep it from tearing more and will keep the cigar from exploding.

Next ill make the cut and give the cigar a few draws to make sure the cut is well. After that I light the edges with my butane torch and light towards the center while taking puffs until a flame is on the foot after I draw.

Following the light I blow on the foot making sure its all red and lit evenly so it doesnt burn uneven. After that enjoy! Hope it helps! Enjoy your smokes!!

I pick the stick up, and look it over from head to toe, looking for cracks, bloom/mold, even/uneven rolled filler.

I'll give it a slight squeeze head, middle, and toe checking firmness, and how moist/dry.

I'll hold about 2 inches of foot in my hand for about 45-60 seconds to warm it up.

I'll make the cut at just above the 50% of ring size, and clean the head from any stragglers.

Before bringing the cigar to my mouth, I'll light starting in the center and then working in a clockwise rotation until the entire foot is evenly burnt in.

Once in mouth repeat drawing slowly, making that flame dance two to three times before putting the torch down.

Not much to it besides cutting and torching. Although, I will pick out a smoke and leave out of the humi for the day or "dry box" it.

Moisten the tip a little, by putting in your mouth, I don't suggest dipping it in anything. If you don't moisten you will probably damage the cigar when you cut it. Cut it, check the draw, then light. As far as what you use to light it, its preference. For me, matches take too long, and I don't think they enhance the flavors at all. I use a butane torch, slowly torch the foot with out actually puttin the flame to the cigar, then once it starts to light I give it a few puffs.

If the cigar has a triple cap, I usually try to cut through the second cap so that the bottom cap is still there to hold it together.
