After having read the Fridge & Wine Cooler Guide thread...
http://www.cigarpass.com/forums/index.php?...c=36623&hl=

I began searching for other possible candidate wine coolers just for the sake of variety.
The Vinotemp ($200) is hands down...the most popular. With the Haier not that far behind.

But I came across these two:

Danby @ Best Buy (35 bottle for $180)
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?sk...d=1118839811167

Soleus @ Fry's Electronics (45 bottle for $140)

Just thought I would ask for everyone's input (and keep this thread as a thread open for additional wine cooler candidates).

The Danby unit has a mechanical temperate control, which probably means a knob to turn.

*Note, in this thread...(ThankYouForNotSmoking) says you should avoid a wine cooler w/ an auto defrost function.

Both of the above mentioned units have an auto defrost function...

Guess that makes both of these units not suitable (or at least...not recommended)?

Everything will have "auto defrost". In a wine cooler, this is nothing more then a drain and an evaporation system. Just plug the drain and redirect the water to some beads or similar.

Let us know how it goes.

Great info,

This forum is now oozing with excellent info for the guys looking to build a frigidor. I think the main reason the Vinotemp coolers are so popular is due to the fact we can run down to target and pick one up. Another excellent reason to go with this unit is because when you open the box up and see that the cooler has been damaged you can just run back with it and return it.

If you have read my thread about building one you will see I had this problem a few times. I personally do not believe that UPS is capable of delivering a wine cooler without damaging it. They are very easily damaged. My origonal Avanti looked like it was air dropped once I unboxed it, and two vinotemp units were also damaged even though the outside box showed no signs of damage.

That being said , once you do set one up for your stogies you will be thrilled with the end product. I love mine  .

see ya

Mike

Question?

"However, it is generally recommended to plug the drain and divert the water back into your beads"

What if one was not to do this and Rh was doing great?

Pros?

Cons?

Thanks in advance
Justin

Oh Shit edit: meant to referance chadth's coolidor thread. Sorry Bra!!

I think it would be fine. If you live in an area where the RH is close to 60ish, it wouldn't matter. If not, the only con would be that you would have to add water more often. I plugged mine and only add a spritz of water about once a month.

Just thought I would provide a update.

I bought my Vinotemp. The popular one from Target (which is currently at a reduced promotional price of $180 instead of $200 at the moment).

But I also came across these other candidates which are pretty competitive to the Vinotemp.

A Haier 42 bottle unit for $252 right now! (Usually $280) (online order only)
http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/sr=1-...asin=B000QFFAWW

A Haier 37 bottle unit for $216 right now! (Usually $240) (online order only)
http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/sr=1-...asin=B000QFA0J0

Now...time to start filling up my Vinotemp!

Domlee- If I am not mistaken, those other two units from Target are compressor-based coolers... Most of the wisdom on this site says to stay away from these, as they remove humidity from the inside when the unit cycles... The Vinotemp (which I also have...) uses thermoelectric cooling. It also removes the humidity, but I don't believe has as extreme fluctuations as the condensor units...

I haven't found a wine cooler bigger than 28 bottles that was thermoelectric...

I have a Cigar Oasis II humidifier in my Vinotemp. It handles ALOT of water (so I don't have to refill often) and it reacts to fluctuations in humidity VERY rapidly... The down-side is my cooler condensation runs at about 2-3 ounces of water per day... Kind of a pain in the arse at first.

I bought some 3/8" clear tubing from Home Depot, took out the Vinotemp's factory drain, and installed the tubing to drain the condensation out of the cooler into a jar... I used silicone to seal the tube to the unit, and made it flush with the bottom of the "scoop" (where the old drain was)... I drilled a little hole off to the right and 2" up from the new drain on the interior wall to run the power cord for the Oasis...

All-in-all, it works like a charm. You will be surprised how much better your cigars smoke with they are in the proper environment...

I hope this helps. If you want more info, let me know...

Good luck!

Regards,

BT
