What a beautiful cigar. Dark, smooth, and supple wrapper. I almost did not want to smoke it because it looked soooo good! But alas, cigars are for smoking. I was very excited to smoke the PL because the PLPC are such great cigars even when young. Also, I have been on a lonsdale kick as of late, so the expectations and excitement for the cigar were high.

Initial draw is very good and the smell at cold is cinnamon and paprika. I roast the foot and start to take some deep puffs. From the start, it has a very creamy texture to the smoke. Very large amounts of smoke come with each draw. First flavors to pop out at me are rich chocolate and light notes of caramel. Very enjoyable smoke so far. After the first inch or so, the caramel becomes more present and a little grassiness mixes in to replace the chocolate.

The PL is medium to full bodied throughout; never overpowering. Towards the middle, cream and coffe are noted along with the ever-present undertone of caramel. I absolutely love the caramel notes from PLs and I can't wait for the PL robustos that are coming out this year for the Asia/Pacific market. Back to the cigar; there is some earthiness to it now that also brings about some bitterness. Nothing too awful, just a reminder of it's youth.

Entering the last third, flavors are still the same. Caramel and more Caramel :). There are some hints of other notes such as almonds and honey. These last mere puffs, however, they do give me hope for aging down the road. The burn is not always the best and requires minor touch-ups along the way to keep it straight. As you can see from the pics, the ash is dark gray and fairly firm. Towards the end, the caramel is replaced by strong leather notes and some dried fruit flavors. I put it down with about 3/4 of an inch left due to some bitterness.

Overall: 91-92 with a very bright outlook for the future. This cigar has the ability to be a blockbuster in the future and after this smoke, it is very tempting to buy a box. It is a shame this is not in the regular PL line. Only real complaints I can say are that it is pricey (around $12 a piece I believe) and it could use a little more punch to it. I think I will have to fire up the Bolivar Colosales next...... ;)

GD Awesome review! Great photos as well. Why the hell can't I just go out and get one of these again....???

FANTASTIC review.
THey are smoking pretty nicely (well, they were when I got my box right when they were released, anyway), and will be stunningly goodin a few years, I think.

Nice pictures and great review. Sounds like a great smoke. That looks like a pretty heavy box press.

Nicely reviewed and well shot, Mike! This cigar seems to have such a wide spread of performance that I'm just puzzled. It certainly sounds like you got one of the "good" boxes. Serious box press too.

Funny thing about the vaunted caramel flavor though. I've never detected what I would call caramel in this cigar and I've smoked 01 (maybe 02, can't rightly remember), 04, 05, and 06 vintages. SCdLH La Fuerza, though. Now there's a caramel, molasses bomb...at least for me. :D

Again, great job.

That's the best way I can describe the flavor Wilkey. Describing specific cigar flavors are quite difficult to me. Others may find it to taste different, but the caramel description is the only way I know how to describe. I have noticed it with all the PL I have smoked. It has the same caramel characteristics that the PLPC has, but that is really all it has in common. No real spice to it like the PC has.

Speaking of '01s, I would love to try some of the original lonsdales and see how they compare. Is the blend fairly different that you can tell?

Great review, is sounds like a wonderful cigar.
I love the PLPC's and this seems like it's more of the same (only longer).
Thanks for the review and pictures.

Nicely done Mike!

I smoked a PLL (second from my box) last week and the draw problems that I experienced with the first were hardly present. I concur, the PL profile is perfect for my palate as well.

Mike,
I should clarify that I was referring to the PLPCs. The curious thing about flavors is that we all interpret them somewhat differently. It's clear that we'd both get the same dose of molecules when smoking the same cigars, it could just be that my sense memory and calibration make different associations.
I found a box of box of the first release of lonsdales but IIRC the cost was something like 750 pounds. A bit more than I was willing to pay for the chance to experience them although in retrospect I probably should have picked them up, smoked one or two and sold off the rest. Doh!
