Pope calls for lifting of US embargo on Cuba

Sat Jan 8, 5:31 PM ET

VATICAN CITY (AFP) - Pope John Paul (news - web sites) II implicitly called for the lifting of the US embargo on Cuba, when he received the credentials of the communist Caribbean state's new ambassador to the Vatican (news - web sites), Raul Roa Kouri.

"The Holy See desires strongly that the obstacles which prevent free communication and exchanges between the Cuban nation and part of the international community are overcome," he said.

This would bring about, "by means of a respectful and open dialogue with everyone, the conditions necessary for real development," he added.

The pope did not make a direct reference to the US embargo imposed in 1962 and toughened last year by President George W. Bush (news - web sites). He had already called for it to be lifted when he visited Cuba seven years ago.

John Paul II also called on the Cuban authorities "to continue their sustained efforts in the fields of health, education and culture," which he said were "among the pillars of the edifice of peace, which is not merely the absence of war."

I don't think it'll happen. For some reason BUsh thinks that Cuba is an actual threat

Bush thinks? Since when? The puppet master Dick thinks Cuba is a threat for whatever reason.

Don't worry, the embargo will work any day now and Castro will come to see the error of his ways. :whistling: :whistling:

Bush thought Iraq was A threat and now we have an endless supply of american made terrorists. Oh wait we still have not dealt with the source of the problem Osama. Sorry my fur bristles at certain things and thats one or #1.

LMAO you Bush haters still can't face the fact that he won the election.

Did Bush put the embargo in place? No, one of your POS liberal heros JFK did right after he secured a few thousand H. Upmann PCs for himself. What year was that, I forget?

Go ask the Democratic and Republican Cuban/American community how they feel about the embargo and get back to us okay? ;) And while your at it, you can stop with your "political" BS. Rod got rid of that forum just because of nonsense like this.

Let us see what has happened here.We have conjoined Religion AND Politics in the SAME f---ing thread. All I can say is........

:sign: STOP IT YOU DAMN FOOLS :sign:

Actually I dont hate Bush or Kerry or anyone Republican, Democratic whatever I just dont like seeing american soldiers die for A cause that is all about money and power. Anyone that is an S&B from Yale is that way though. And Kerry is no differant. Anyways sorry for the political posts it wont happen again.

IT just did

There's absolutely no reason for us to have an embargo against Cuba. We trade with country's that do pose a threat, yet we think Cuba's a threat? What a joke. It's time the embargo get's lifted, it's nothing but nonsense, and perhaps Bush will some day understand that. And yes, I voted for Bush, yet I don't agree with everything he does. That's a whole 'nother topic to be discussed on some politcal forum though. ;)

Uhhhhhhhhhh, I don't think it's 'cause they are perceived as any kind of threat or anything. It's not just Bush or Clinton or GHW Bush or Reagan or Carter or Ford or Nixon or Johnson or whoever has been president for the last 40+ years, there are a whole lot of other factors behind the decision to start this and to keep it in place. While I'm not up on all the particulars of the history around it, I do know that there are many Cuban-Americans who want the embargo to remain in place. I also know that there are many who are not happy with Castro's continued human rights violations and until he cleans up his act there are many who want the sanctions to remain in place.

It's not like it's all Bush's decision. Hey you lefties (not you Rod :D ), why didn't you scream when Clinton didn't lift it? Hell, he was in office for 8 years even though he was impeached.

There's more to it than just another reason to throw stones at Bush. Again, I think the Pope should go piss up a rope. I really don't care what his views on the subject are.

You know that national embarasment Clinton took time out from getting his pipe cleaned long enough to normalize relations with Vietnam. Why didn't he go ahead and lift the Cuban imbargo while he was at it?? Had to be only because there was a public opinion poll that told him it was more popular to do nothing then it was to lift it. The guy totally and compleatly governed by his crotch and a fist full of opinion polls. Take issue with him for not standing up and believing in anything other then a good time and getting elected. Heck, he didn't even take long enough time out from his more important things to even kill Osama on the several ocasions that he had a chance. Better to just wait around until the guy kills thousands and there is then some real puplic polls suport for doing something about the guy. ;) It's not like the killing of 18 american sailors, the bombing of two embassys or even the first attempt to bomb the world trade center would have ever been good enough reasons by themselves to just get the guy and not worry about how popular it would or wouldn't be.

What a difference a year makes.

15 Sep 2001 President George W Bush: "If [Osama bin Laden] thinks he can hide and run from the United States and our allies, he will be sorely mistaken."

13 Mar 2002 President George W Bush: "I don't know where he is. You know, I just don't spend that much time on him, Kelly, to be honest with you. [...] I don't know where he is. I -- I'll repeat what I said. I truly am not that concerned about him."

I believe the embargo will be lifted within 12 months of Castro's passing. Considering his age and diminishing health, it may not be too long in coming.

What'll the lifting of the embargo mean to the price of ISOMs? Anyone given any thought to that? I'd guess they would come down in price, but really haven't considered it enough to know for sure.

- The Pope went on to say once the embargo is lifted all Cuban cigars should be sent to the following address on file ......................... ROTFLMAO

The Pope should care less about the damn embargo and more on what's happening with his Priest in his own HOUSE! Hey little boy did you hear the one ......

I don't mean to bring up the 800 ib. elephant in the room that everyone is ignoring, but I'm curious here-does anyone here agree with the embargo to such an extent that they refuse to smoke or even possess ISOMs? :whistling:

Supply and demand... embargo lifted, demand goes up (all the people who are affraid to break the law start buying) and prices go up. 2nd point, many here get ISOM's from places with little taxation. You think the U.S. will NOT put some sort of tax on Cuban cigars?

The only question is, can Cuba meet the extra demand the U.S. consumers will add to the global Cuban cigar market?

Sorry about the duplicate post. When I hit the submit reply button, the browser stalled and came up with an error, so I hit my back button and clicked it again...
