Plume question

I was speaking to someone the other day who told me they sometimes see plume upon opening brand new boxes of cigars. I know what this person is seeing, and it ain't plume. A little concerning given how this individual earns his bread and butter, but I'm just curious to know what the youngest stick is that you've seen develop any plume? Not looking to rehash the debate about mold vs. plume or how long it takes to develop plume or if you plume for the right reasons, I got all that. I just want to know the shortest period of time in which you've seen it develop and if you've EVER seen it right out of the box??

I can't recall ever seeing real plume on anything with less than a couple of years on it.

Good question DeVonn.

From my own experiences (ISOM)...and I always open a box that I will age...gotta be 5+ years minimum before I saw any real plumage....probably longer. And I don't have it on every long term aged cigars I have. It seems to occur on heavier leaf tobacco....H.Upmann & Partagas. Not as much on lighter leaf cigars like Bolivar, Monti, HdM, etc.

Although I had an old box (early 90s) of Monti As that plumed like crazy at about the 4-5 year mark if memory serves me correctly. I remember because it really stood out as not being normal...they smoked really good, but looked funky when we would take a few out to smoke.

I'm sure plenty of us have 5+ year old (non ISOM) sticks and have no trace of plume...at least I do. Fuente, Padron, and Ashton that don't have a speck so far.

I had some plume on a box of Padron Churchills. They were real good. My opinion on plume development is that you have to have the humidity high enough to get the oils to migrate to the surface of the wrapper. I have only seen plume on cigars aged at higher humidity of 70 or above.

You guys are all wrong..... It is nam de plume for us english scholars.

I age my smokes at 80% humidity and 80 degrees and get fuzzy little balls of plume in about two months. I think you have to give time for the plume beetles to hatch and start building the plume on your cigars.

Anyone wanna work a trade?

We had some nice plume on those Monte A's from our GB a couple years ago DeVonn. Ah the good 'ol days! :D Would have to agree that at LEAST a couple years, and at the right conditions to get plume.

I've opened up Padron boxes (sizes that would hardly sell) and they would have some plume on them. Recently, I cracked open a box of Padron 44s and they had plume. Unfortunately, there was no piece of paper in it like in the other boxes, telling you who rolled them and when.

La Aurora Preferidos #1 corojo seem to consistently have plume on them.
At least the last couple of boxes I've seen did.
