Pirate's Gold by Rolando Reyes Sr. No. 2 Maduro
Country: Honduran
Length/Ring: 6.5" x 46
Shape: Corona
Wrapper: Maduro
There has been some talk about this smoke in the forum so I thought I would try them out. I went to Cbid and was able to get this cigar for less than a buck a stick. I got my box last night and lit one up today fresh out of the package.
Construction is nice with thin veins and a good golden brown color. Pre-light draw was excellent with a somewhat earthy flavor to it.
The cigar lit up with no trouble with a nice ash that stuck for well over an inch before I ended up knocking it off. The burn was not perfect, but did not require me to do any relights.
Flavor is what I would call medium to medium-full. The start was pretty mild, but after a couple minutes, the spicy flavor grew stronger. Draw was excellent throughout the entire cigar and I could detect a slight sweetness for most of the smoke. The spicy flavor grew strongest about half way through and then settled back a bit for the remainder and the taste lingered in the mouth for some time. Good tobacco taste with what I might call a touch of leather perhaps toward the end.
For a dollar smoke I must say that I am impressed. A nice mixture of flavors blended with a moderate amount of smoke made for a nice view of the Alaskan sunset. I was regretting having bid on as many as I did, but now I am glad to have a supply of these gems resting in my humidor.
I did some reading on this brand and it turns out that it was once made in the Dominican, which were the ones that most people seem to hate. The Hondurans like these and the few that were made in Nicaragua are said to be much better. I would agree. These are a fine smoke.
For a buck or less a stick off of Cbid, this is a great deal on a suprise of a good smoke. And at that price, I will not have to feel guilty if I am called off to work and end up wasting half a cigar.
