Alright, I've been doing some looking around and this is what I can come up with. Like I said, I don't have a local B&M so I tried to include some of the tobacco from some of my favorite online shops in OPTION A. It's the best I could do.

OPTION A
1 oz samples of the following:

Nut Brown Burley
Old Lodge
Trout Stream
Gotham Court
Frog Morton on the Bayou (from 2003)
Vermont Maple
Larry's Blend
Foxhound
GL Pease Westminster
Autumn Evening

I tried to keep a balance of Aromatics and English blends. I don't think "value for value" is really a concern when we're talking about such a small amount of tobacco, so I think everyone should just take 1 or 2 blends and put 1 or 2 blends that they think others will enjoy. My only request is that we treat this with respect for all of those involved. In other words, don't dump your Altadis free samplers in there.

The biggest problem I'm having is the postage is going to cost more than the tobacco that one takes from the box. I'm trying to look at this as a "trial run" so to speak, so it's really just for the fun of it and hopefully someone will get to try something new.

OPTION B
I found a pass at a predominantly pipe smoker board and they did it a little differently. Everyone that wanted to play posted what they wanted to send and sent the organizer a tin or at least a 2 oz. sample of 1 or 2 blends. The organizer then sent the box around to everyone and they took samples of whatever blends they wanted making sure to keep their fellow brothers in mind. This would certainly give us more variety to start with, however it would make shipping twice as much and it does require more time. Again, considering this is a "trial run" and really for fun, I don't know how big of a deal that is.

There were 8 that showed interest in Bilder's previous thread. I think that's a decent number given either option above. Invites go to the following members:

(Please note this is not the pass order)

1.Bilder
2.BrewMeister
3.marcsheldon
4.TampaSupremo
5.LilBastage
6.IgwanaRob
7.cuppajack
8.Mr_Wolf

The first order of business is to decide which way we want to do this. I'm willing to organize the whole thing either way, so that makes no difference. However, I think that Option B gives us a greater variety and is a little more fun. Also, if we do Option B we could include a few more people if they want in. If we go with Option A, 8 is probably the upper limit already.

I vote for Option B.

If anyone has ANY suggestions/concerns/just want to call me names, please fire away. From what I can gather this has never been done at CigarPass, so it's a learning experience. I've also never run a pass, but I'm pretty sure I can handle something of this nature. Please do put your concerns here in the thread. That way it's all open and we can all work it out together. If this goes well, maybe we can do more in the future based on what we learn here. Don't worry, your not going to hurt my feelings. :)

I vote for Option B. I was actually thinking along the same lines about doing it this way today.

if we went with option "a", it looks like there might be 10-15 2oz puts on average. Does anyone smarter than me know what it would cost to ship a box weighing roughly 2 lbs? Depending on the price, I think I like option "a" better. Mostly from a time standpoint. But I'm fine either way.

By the way, thanks for getting this together alan And thanks for the free pass to call you a vulgar name. Can I use it anywhere or is the free pass only valid in this thread?

Feel free to use it whenever you'd like. :p

:)

The shipping is a concern. I thought about a flat rate box ($8.95 up to 70 lbs.) if it turned out to be less than regular Priority. I know Priority Mail shoots up pretty fast once you get over a pound or so.

USPS flat rate boxes would run under 10 bucks and should be able to hold the tobacco and then some.

You can get the flat rate boxes at your local PO or order online for free from the USPS site.

Either option would work for me.

B is a good option. As was stated, thats 10-15 samples that everyone gets to choose from so no one misses out on something down the line. Although the roll of the dice is part of the fun of "A" I guess. Either way, I'm in.

That was a vote for "B" by the way.

Option "A" for me.

Don't understand the idea of me sending you tobacco so you can send the same tin it back to me?

Postage for a two pound priority box from Pennsylvania to Houston Texas is $6.55.

I think we should keep value for value in mind, as some of the more expensive stuff is considerably more than my local Boswell's Best house blend. Also limit it to 2 or 3 takes.

Just my 2 cents.

Does everyone besides Alan have access to a B&M with House Blends? We could do option A with just House Blends, 1 oz. each, do P&T's per a normal box pass and maybe limit it to 2-3 P&T's per person to help keep the weight down. Shouldn't be a need for a tupperdor, a big zip-loc should work just fine. House Blends would keep the value for value pretty close. This way since Alan doesn't have a local B&M, at the end of the pass he'll get to try local stuff from all over the country!

I think the idea behind it is that everyone gets a shot to try all the blends from each person. One person collects it all and then sends the whole shooting match to the next and as the box goes around people just take a couple of bowl fulls or so. The whole thing gets sent around to everybody. It does sound a little odd, but apparently that's how many pipe tobacco passes are done. It's a little different than the normal pass here for sure.

The only reason I discounted value in Option A is because it's such a small amount of tobacco. If we were talking full tins or 3 or 4 ounces, I would for sure think that value for value would be a consideration. We can certainly consider it once we figure out what we're going to do.

This would be a great way to go for me, obviously, but does that leave the rest of you out in the cold as far as trying new stuff? The person that gets the box first from me won't have much as far as regional blends go. I really don't want anyone to feel slighted because of a lack of originality on my part.

Maybe I'm not the best candidate to get this started?

If the majority would like to do a B&M local blend type pass. And Alan, would rather not start that type of pass. I could start it off with say 24 each, 1 ounce blends from Boswells. Each piper could take a couple bags, add a couple bags from their local or a tin of something they'd like to pass along. And so on...

Just a suggestion. Not trying to step on anyone's toes. Whatever works...

It's not that I don't want to, believe me. :) I just can't. :(

Whatever works for the most people. This is all about having fun, right?

I'd be more than willing to do one of the options I laid out. I'd be more than willing to simply be invited to play. I would really just like to see this get off the ground and increase the activity in the Pipe Room a little. I don't like going to other boards and starting all over again. I like it here and I'd like to see this part of the site grow.

I've got a new Boswell being made as we speak. I can't wait to get that bad boy in my hands. :) I can't wait to post some pics here in the Pipe Room!

Hmmmm....we could re-name it the Boswell Pass! That would be cool. I don't think anyone would miss out, it will be fun either way. I'd be more interested in local blends personally, tins you can get off the 'net anytime. But I'll go with the majority. :D

If Brew wants to go ahead, that's fine by me. Like I said, I just want to be involved. Maybe when I get a little more stock under my belt I can do something a little more.

Thanks for stepping up, Tim. Go right ahead with the pass. :)

Cool beans!

While your there, see if he has any lighter wood for my Minnie Ball. Please :D

A 50g tin is 1.75 oz, so it's not really that small of an amount (more than half a tin).
