After a fine ribeye steak dinner, my interest turned to a really great smoke. A quick dig through the cabinet turned up a PAN Exclusivo with a humi date of '06. It occurred to me that this should be an absolutely perfect smoke for a post dinner celebration. A glass of Trentadue Petite Sirah Port was the accompaniment.

Padron 64's are really beautiful smokes. Nicely box pressed, not "dripping" with oil but luscious in appearance, they are some of the best. The wrapper of this beauty had some small veins apparant, but was very "interesting" in that it clearly had some texture and detail to it. It was not "silky smooth" as some smokes are, but rather appeared to be made from a real leaf of tobacco. Not a slam against other smokes, to be sure, but the fact is that this beauty had some texture to it. The nicely aged wrapper wasn't giving up any really distinct or noticeable flavors other than well aged, well chosen, well fermented tobacco. This, in a nutshell, is what I love about these smokes. Not so much about pepper or nuts or berries or chocolate (despite what the print catalogs would have you belive) or coffee or whatever. Nope, these wonderful smokes taste like they are made from really good, really well chosen tobacco. Just sublime in their simplicity, just exceptional in the taste.

A snip with the Xikar yielded a clean cut that produced and absolutely perfect draw. Perhaps a bit more open than some like but flawless in my mind. The pre-light draw tastes were beautiful, amplifying the tastes I outlined above. Torch time...!!

A wonderful paring:

A '64 is a beautiful smoke, to be sure:

And, we're off and running:

The thing that never fails to impress me with these smokes is the simple taste profile that is so darn satisfying. Throughout the smoke, it was very uniform; maybe some leather, maybe some good tea, but more than anything, a straight forward tobacco taste that is absolutely lucious. No spice, flowers, etc....just well cultured, well cured, meticulously blended tobacco. The construction is flawless, and the burn textbook perfect. Absolutely wonderful.... The Trentadue port made an absolutely fantastic paring, offering some sweetness and a non-overwhelming accompaniment that was just fantastic.

As we press on:

It doesn't get much better:

Onward, with no letup in the taste:

Long and short of it is that the Padron Maduro's seem to garner the bulk of most folks attention. That's too bad in that the natural wrapper smokes are fantastic in their own right. Not a "zippy" or "splashy" smoke, but when it comes to a flavor profile that satisfies and offerers up a basic, clean, and wonderful palate....I think they are hard to beat..!!...

Have a great weekend, gents - B.B.S.

Great review BBS and great scenery as well. Smoking season is in full bloom, keep the reviews coming.

Great review along with a nice view! I may have a PAN somewhere around I'll have to get out and try. No port to pair with, so maybe a bit of Mcallan 18 will do the trick. Thanks for the review Tom!!

Great review BBS. I'm glad that you gave the PAN its due. Both the 1964, and the 26 in both Maduro and Natural are always represented in my humidor.
Though I am just a little bit snipped about them equaling the price. :D

Hey, I know that smoking veranda! Rosie's still looking as cute as ever.

Great review and it's about time someone else wrote a review that focused on the clarity and presentation of the core tobacco flavor. For me, no amount of extraneous flavor notes makes a pinch of difference if the cigar doesn't deliver great tobacco flavor. And if there's one thing Padrons deliver, it's this pure tobacco essence.

I guess it wouldn't surprise you to learn that after all these years, I just recently acquired my first box of PAN Exclusivos.

Well done, my friend. Well done.

Nice review BBS. I, much like yourself, seem to enjoy the PAN's as much or more than I like the maduro version. Both are fantasic, but their is something about the natural in this particular line that I like. That lower deck area is very nice, and it has a fantastic view. I can easily see why you like to retreat there to enjoy an afternoon.

Indeed a fine review BBS. Quite the view you got there in your quarters. Sure does help overall with the smoking expereince in my opinion. PAN Excusivo is one of the finest examples of balance that I have expereinced in a cigar. I'm sure a couple years resting time helps out too...

** Portion in bold done so by me for emphasis **

I thorougly agree with your statement in regards to natural wrapper cigars. They can be equally full bodied and full flavored as maduro wrapper cigars can be, but with a truer taste of the tobacco leaf's inherent flavor. The maduro process is a fermentation adulteration of the tobacco leaf's flavor profile(s) and often misrepresents what I want to perceive in taste. I would rather adulterate my taste perception by my choice of drink pairing (coffee/scotch/wine, etc) if that is my choice to do so. Otherwise, I want as true a taste of the tobacco leaf as possible and would mostly prefer to skip the maduro fermentation process altogether.

This, from a formerly (nearly) exclusive maduro cigar smoker.

I've had two 1964s and I can say it is top 3 in my book. I wish I could afford more, but at my budget I've taken to aging 2000s and 3000s for 6 months ;) Anyway, great review sir. Made me want one badly. Maybe It is time to spring for another... Also, beautiful view!

Fantastic review of a great cigar! I was first drawn to the Padron maddies, and it took me a while to appreciate the natural wrapper. Now, I prefer the naturals, although I think the difference between the two is subtle.

Personally, besides the millenium (the oldest I've sampled recently is from 04'), I find age changes the character little. I was wondering if anyone finds age to have any effect on the the 64' or 26' line?

I am right there with you on the naturals. They are some fantastic smokes. When I have one on hand thats what I prefer to start off a HERF day with. Great review!

Never mind the cigar and wine. Holy amazing deck/patio/whatever that is.

Can I move in? I eat very little and you'll never know I'm there. I swear.

Very nice review Tom. I much prefer the PAN over the PAM. Both are great smokes, but the PAN has something I tend to lean towards! Thanks for reminding me. Very nice deck by the way!!

Very nice story Tom. That was some work sharing your moment.

Oh yes, Padron, never disappoints, one of those go to smokes, any time any place.

Personally I prefer the Maduro, I do like the natural 26 #6 for some reason.

Great review and these are fantastic smokes. I have a couple left from a bundle I bought last year and they smoke unbelievably well. Love em!

Guys, thanks so much for the nice comments on the yard. We added the concrete and arbor about two years ago during a bit of home remodeling. It sure made a nice space outside that's under cover. We can grill when it's raining.....which here in the Pacific Northwest, is more often than not. Ms. B.B.S. is in charge of landscape design and loves working in the yard, so I'll pass the nice comments along to "the boss".....

Age changes any smoke, but IMHO in the case of the high end Padron smokes, it's a far more subtle change than in some other brands and vitolas. They still seem to smooth out and mellow just a bit with age. Sure didn't hurt this example.....

Excellent review! The descriptions were right on. A great review from one of CP's finest!

Excellent review, Tom. I've worked my way through the maduros (well, once I smoke the Millenium maduro I was graciously gifted on Father's Day) and the naturals are next. I've smoked most of the x000 seris in natural, but nothing else, really. I've never met a Padron I didn't like, so I'm looking forward to it!
Personally I prefer the Maduro, I do like the natural 26 #6 for some reason.

Does anything in particular stand out to you with the 1926 line in natural, Brian? Is it just the "clean" nature of the flavors?

That's my experience as well. I've smoked some 64's with a few years on that they get mellower and smoother but the essential profile and progression really doesn't change as far as I can tell. In this case, it's a good thing.
