I was on the way home yesterday from the office and decided to go see my local guy here in Charlottesville. Jack didn't have anything new in, but did still have some Padron Serie 1926 No. 2s in natural. Looked at that cigar and just knew that's what I wanted to smoke when I got home. So I did.
Padron Serie 1926 No. 2 Natural
As with all 1926's this is just a great looking cigar. Nice box press on this short torpedo. The wrapper was a tannish color with just a shade of gray-green to it (very different, actually). There were no noticable veins and only one seam that stood out. Aesthetically, a very nice cigar. The pre-light nose was mild, but promised wood and coffee as well as just a hint of the Nicaraguan sweetness. The pre-light draw was open and easy with only a small bit clipped off the end.
The cigar lit easily except for the ligero in the middle of the roll...it required a second application of the torch. Touched it off and away we went. The burn, in a word, perfect. Don't think it could have burned any straighter. The draw stayed open and each puff coaxed thick mouthfuls of rich smoke from the No. 2. I was sitting on the porch with the ceiling fan going and the smoke still wanted to linger just like a friend reluctant to leave. The cigar was cool all the way down to the nub. It never got hot on the draw and I only put it down because it was burning my fingers. The ash was white and very firm, staying on an inch to inch and a half at a time. Absolutely perfect construction.
The first thing that I noticed was that this cigar has a bit of kick. It was a bit stronger than the other 1926s and 1964s that I have had the pleasure of enjoying. The initial flavor was classic Padron black pepper. This lasted only a couple of puffs before settling out to a woody, smokey flavor profile. The Nicaraguan sweetness was there, but was more like a distant voice in the back of your head reminding you where the tobacco was from. It was intermittant, not a primary player. After about an inch in, the smokiness faded into powerful coffee/espresso flavors that were always complimented by the wood and some good hay flavors (more like the pleasant smell of a hay field). The cigar ended with some good charred-wood flavors and more coffee. Excellent tasting cigar.
Yes, this was the cigar that I was in the mood for. So, I spoiled myself. Perfect construction, excellent flavors, great cigar. Matched it with an iced coffee and I was all set. Overall, I have to give this cigar an A+.
