Seemed apropos that on my 40th birthday, I smoke a Padron 1926 Serie 40 Years. After cooking, mowing, cleaning and sweating the previous day to get ready for a party with my family and friends, this night was mine alone. (well, as "mine" as a married guy can get. My wife was with me while I smoked it.) I headed out to my deck with a glass of Booker's bourbon, a glass of water and this beautifully constructed cigar. After clipping the head slightly, I tasted it cold and got very rich, complex tobacco taste. Normally with the 1926 Serie naturals that I've smoked I can taste nothing but good tobacco and maybe a hint of sweetened, condensed milk (sorry Doc). If I had tasted this cigar blind I would've sworn that this was a 1926 maduro. It had that sweetness and complexity that I taste in the maduro, but this was most definitely a natural.
The first couple of puffs produced a wonderful amount of smoke and a musty taste I had never tasted in a Padron. Not the Avo mustiness that I like in his cigars but a deeper mustiness that had to be from the older, well-matured tobacco. The first third was giving me the familiar 1926 profile taste, albeit the maduro profile, but there was something else. There was a palatable meatiness to this cigar. I didn't taste steak or prime rib or anything of that nature but there was just something "meaty" about it. Like a 1926 Serie on steroids. I would occasionally get a hint of gingerbread but it was nothing consistent, although I did enjoy it when present. The Booker's was going down quite well too. I cut it 2 to 1 and this seems to be the sweet spot for me. Almost oily with wonderful vanilla, butterscotch and charred oak.
Second third was staying pretty consistent with the first third. Very rich and well-fermented tobacco is dominant. I am having some burn issues with this, and from my experience, this is not the norm with Padrons. I haven't had to relight it but it certainly is not burning like a Padron. I have had this cigar in my humidor since February so it should be acclimated. It is very humid out with a dew point of 74 degrees so that may have something to do with it.
Final third and the flavors are remaining strong. The full bodied complexity that I have come to associate with the maduros of this line are present in spades in this natural iteration. The Booker's was a great pairing as both are full-bodied and rich with flavors. This is a great way to celebrate. The burn issues become a little more frustrating and it actually goes out twice on me in the final third. About 2 inches left and I am having to puff hard to keep it going which causes it to burn hot and messes up the beautiful flavors I was getting. I was on the verge setting it down when it finds itself again and stays lit with good flavor until it starts to burn my fingers and I realize I am holding nothing more than a stub.
This was a wonderful smoke and one of the best cigars I've ever had. I had a Padron 44 (retail release) earlier this year at the Padron/Outlaw event and this was a better smoke in my opinion. The price point definitely keeps me from making this an everyday smoke but I'm only turning 40 once and this seemed like the perfect way to celebrate. If you are looking for a cigar to celebrate a special event with and you like full-flavored cigars, I cannot recommend this cigar enough. Smoking time was 2hrs virtually on the nose. There are a few things I would rather spend 2hrs doing than smoking this cigar with a glass of Booker's, but none of them involve me being clothed. Treat yourself once in awhile and try this cigar, you won't be disappointed. Hopefully I can properly enjoy the Padron 80th at the appropriate time as well someday.
