Padron 26 #2 review

So after a visit to my local cigar shop, buying Padron 64's, I got into a discussion with the owner about the greatness of the Padron anniversary series. Come to find out he had my long sought after 26 maduro hidden in the back humidor. (note to newbies like myself: cigar shops rarely keep their best cigars out front) So I jumped at the chance to buy it although it cost $22.

After about a week in my humidor I decided to light it up. I had just finished a meal of cheese and crackers as an appetizer and stuffed shrimp with a glass of 2003 Seghesio zinfandel. My palette felt a bit overwhelmed and I cleansed it with cool water as best I could. I matched that cigar with the rest of the bottle of wine (minus the couple of small glasses my wife drank). This was certainly a beautiful looking cigar, near flawless wrapper with minimal veins. It was consistently firm throughout yet a bit pliable with a moderate amount of oils on the wrapper. It had a peppery smell and I actually sneezed when sniffing the foot! I lit it with a match and it lit up easily. The first few puffs gave me a slight harshness at the back of my throat but this is completely normal and it quickly mellowed. It quickly opened up to nice dark chocolate, cocoa and a very slight almond and wood taste. It also left a bit of a metallic taste on my palate but the sips of wine helped with that nicely. As it burned It had notes of spice but not too overwhelmingly. The ash held very well, about half way down the cigar, which was very white with a few dark streaks. Half way down it became richer and creamier with a bit more spice but still not overly spicy. There were no hints of bitterness just rich and creamy smoke. The smoke volume seemed good but its hard to tell as my wife makes me smoke in the back room with the fan on. As it neared the end it got richer and richer. I even noticed some Opus X like raisin taste to it which surprised me. It had very little tar buildup until the very end which made it easy to nub. It had a razor sharp burn throughout. Definitely a classic cigar!

The verdict:

Without a doubt one of the best cigars I have ever smoked. I buy 64 Exclusivo's for $13 and they are also great but maybe less rich and complex. Its hard to justify the extra nine dollars but its something every aficionado should try at least once.

I love the '26's. One of my favorite Padrons, but I truly think they can do no wrong. :)

The tinderbox keeps theres out front. I kinda miss that place. :(

I've got a No. 2 sitting in my humi. It's been there over a year. Who knows when I'll smoke it, though. Either way, I can't wait.

Thanks for the review! I'm salivating.

I prefer the 1926s over the 1964s. You paid way too much for that #2. The MSRP is around $16.00 each.

I agree with your assessment, I think the 1926s are more complex and richer than the 1964s and you're right, everyone should at least TRY one at some point or keep a few in the humi for special occasions!!

I smoked a #1 this past weekend and itwas fantastic.

I also love the '26s, especially the #9M's. IMO they blow away any of the '64s which have never really done it for me.

The #1 is my favorite also. I finally smoked one of the 40th annis that I have. Oh my god, I thought that I had died and gone to heaven   . Rich, creamy, smooth, complex. If only I could describe the experience like Scot does so well!!

Try this little experiment we like to tell people about at the Outlaw.
Smoke 64's for a while no 26's at all get real familiar with the taste.
Then sit back one day and smoke a 26. You'll notice the difference. I didnt beleive it myself but its true, there is a difference. I wont go any farther cuz the realization and dicovery is half the fun. Now i know this sounds expensive so do it over time. But you will find the differnces and by doing so enjoy many fine cigars.Oh and you paid too much too i can get you a #1 for 22 bucks, any day of the week

Nice review. I smoked a 1926 at that a buddy bought me for a wedding present. This has been my only padron so far. I am now looking forward to trying some of the K series sticks. I think I will smoke a 5000 or 6000 today when I get off of work.

Either the 5000 or the 6000 will treat you extremely nicely. They are all excellent and, for the price, you can absolutely not go wrong.

Thanks everyone for your responses. It looks like we can all agree that the '26s are better than the '64s. If I can find them for MSRP then they are worth the extra money too. I've smoked about ten or so maduro '64s so I could tell the difference when smoking the '26. I've only smoked one '64 natural and one '26 natural and had a harder time noticing a difference between those. I smoke maduros and naturals equally and don't really have a preference in general, but as far as Padron anniversaries go I seem to prefer the maduros for some reason. I agree with MiamiCubano though, every Padron I've had was good.

I stocked up on PAM Exclusivos because I liked them so much. Then, I smoked a '26 #9 maduro. Then, I smoked a #6.  Can't go wrong with this line! I am now stocking up on #9s and acquired a box of #6s. Perfect size if you don't have a lot of time.

BTW, you can buy '64s and '26s directly from Padron in Miami at MSRP:

'26 #6 Maduro = $288.00
'26 #2 Maduro = $384.00
'64 Exclusivo Maduro = $255.00
'64 Torpedo Maduro = $300.00

jingles: that's a great tip!

Mr. Dostoyevski: great review. I was at the point when I thought '26s were a rip (great cigar, just not worth the price) but I have to reconsider that notion.

I have the Price List and CC Authorization Form on my website as PDFs. Anyone can feel free to PM me and I will send you the links to download them. These came direct from Padron after I emailed them asking if they sell to consumers direct.

EDIT: Scratch that - I don't want to respond to a bunch of PMs. :p View my profile, links are in there...

great idea.

Interesting that they don't differentiate between the Nat. and Mad. on the '26.

I guess it's only a good deal for the high end stuff. I've seen the regular line for abotu 2/3 of the MSRP price.

Just made an order of 2 more boxes of Exclusivos and a box of No. 2s. Thanks for the tip!!
