I often don't have time to really enjoy a "high end" smoke during the week, so I've been going through a few of the LaLuna LHB / Series R "Coladas" (4 X 44-ish) and some other very good but smaller sticks. Last night, I found a Padron 2000 maduro that had basically been buried in my humi and forgotten for almost a year; one of the first 5-ers of "decent" smokes I bought as I began to smoke quality cigars almost a year ago. I was anxious to see what, if anything, a year of down time did for it.

Out of the cello, I was really surprised as to the smell and feel of this "blue collar" Padron; it was just fantastic. Snipped clean with the Xikar and the draw was surprisingly open and the pre light taste was just fantastic. A long nap clearly didn't hurt this one a bit. A sleeper? Only one way to find out.... :p

With fresh memories of a PAM64 and an OpusX, I'll say up front that what this little guy lacked is complexity of taste, but it stood tall and was a very enjoyable smoke. I would say that the single thing I notice in really fine cigars is that as you go, the tastes develop, "bloom" if you will, and change to some degree. Of course those tastes are very different but for me it's the complexity of flavor and the way they develop that makes the "big guys" interesting.

This one started off a little rough but quickly settled down into that smooth richness that I think is typical Padron. You bet it reminded me of the PAM, but clearly didn't have the overwhelming smoothness and absolute creaminess of the PAM. The PAM just blew me away with earthy, coffee like tastes that just kept rolling along, changing as it went; almost like smoking a rich dessert. But, most if not all the same tastes were in there, though to a much lesser degree in the 2000 maddie. The smoke was dense and rich start to finish. I nubbed this one; it was a really nice surprise, to be sure. Makes me think a box of 2K / 3K maddies with a couple of years on them would be great smokes. Hmm..... :whistling:

Nice review, I wish i could save mine long enough to age them.

Nice review. I think your observations hold for all the Padrons; they are great out of the box; they are fantastic with a little age.

Good review! They do definetly get a little better with some age to them...ive got a small handful that have got 2+ years of humi time on them and they definetly smoke better than the box i recently bought.

Gator and I had Padron 4000's that were 4 years old given to us at a herf. They were absolutely amazing. As good if not better than a fresh anniversary. Smooooooooooth is an understatement.

Maybe one of you guys know; other than the obvious size differences, is there any difference in the tobacco blends in the 2K / 3K / 4K / etc.K Padron smokes? I've looked and can't find any conclusive info.....

They all have their own distinct flavors so i believe they are more than just different sizes/shapes...however out of their *000 series, the 2000's are still my favorite!

From what I have heard from local shop owner it is just the size. However, the size of the gar changes the taste.

BTW - I only like Maduro wrappers on Padrons.

From what I have been told the blend is the same in all of the 000 series. They are all great smokes that with age do get better. They take on the characteristics of the 1964's because they smooth out with age.

I just wish I could age these like I do my Cubans, for some reason I can't keep my hands off them when fresh.

RIght on! Excellent review.

This is the reason why I am so nuts for Padron. They have stuff that spans the everyday smoke to "birth of your first kid" as far as occasions and they are all good and consistent.

This was a nice review, and indeed it's my experience as well that these sticks improve with age.

As to some of the other issues raised: Remember that, while the blend may be the same, and undoubtedly is with the Padron x000 line, the percentage of filler to wrapper changes based on the size of the cigar, so this will cause variation in flavor. In addition, the differences in length and ring gauge also impact the experience, as do other factors, not least among which is the smoking technique. It never ceases to amaze me how a novice smoker (not to insinuate anything about anyone I'm just making a point) can come into the shop and buy an absolutely exquisite smoke and come back and tell me how terrible it was. A year later, with a bit of experience under their belts and a history of smokes to compare to they often buy the exact same smoke and come back with gushing praise.

So, does this mean that both cigars AND cigar smokers get better with age? ;)

If the material is good, yeah, I think that's the way it's supposed to go.

..topping this one as I smoked another one of that nearly year old 2K stash I found. Got to say it was as great as the one I reviewed. Now, after a few "critical" sessions with some of the different Padron smokes, I really notice they all seem to take 1/2-1" of smoking to really get rolling and it's interesting to me how much they change. The smoke density changes dramitically and they smoooooth out and really make for a super plesant smoke. Tonight's smoke was creamy, rich, and seemed to cool off and really produced as it went along right up to the nub. Very interesting to me how it seemed to cool down and get more intense as it went. The nice cab that I drank with it didn't hurt a bit..... :p

I tend to agree. Padrons, in my experience, more than most other brands tend to have looser draws. It does sometimes take a while for the stick to build up to a "critical mass" but when it does, that's when the real fun starts.

I find Padron's a little harsh without age ... I buy a lot of londres and I have a box of 2000s put away right now ... after about 18-24 months these are very good cigars. Personally I think the Padrons should age their rolled sticks (regular line) for at least 6 months before release but this would add to the sticker price.

This is the final nail in the coffin....going to my local cigar shop and picking me up a box of Padron 2000 Maduros to stash away.

Damn you and youre enticing reviews! My pocketbook hates you all. :p

Played golf last weekend and took a half dozen Padron 4K Maduros for my playing partners. The box I have only has about 6 months of age on it, but everybody raved about them. BBS is right, they only get better the longer you have them  .

Hehe,

At least it's a modest hit. It's when you develop a taste for the Anniversarios that the wallet starts screaming. :D
