Well, since i'm still a rookie at trying new cigars, i'll be doing a few reviews over the next few weeks as i try new ones from my stash (this is fun).

Had about an hour to spare after dinner, so i headed out to the deck w/ a couple fingers of Balvenie Portwood 21 and a Padron 1964 Torpedo. The fumes of the Scotch must have affected me on the cut, i went a little to far and crooked  . Pre-light draw was perfect, very nicely constructed stick, the wrapper looks different than most of my other sticks, not that that's bad.

Light was no worries, produced alot of smoke, and BOOM, a kick of spice hit me :D along w/ some woodsy flavors and maybe leather (i'm still learning how to describe what i taste), this continued the 1st third of the smoke. Burn was so so, had to make a couple small corrections, probably due to only being a week in the coolidor.

2nd third really mellowed out and produced lots of creamy smoke and flavors, Cedar, cinnamon, chocolate are some of the ones i can describe, really flavorful :D. Ash stayed on for 1/2 of the smoke, even though it leaned.

last third got kinda stanky, slightly bitter, and my hour was ending, so i bailed partway into the final third.

Overall, good smoke, but not great. This was probably due to the cigar needing some more age on it, especially another few weeks to get to 65% humidity. I think in a month i'll smoke another, and i'm guessing it will be much improved.

My guard dog Boudreaux, protecting the family against the coons eating around the corn feeder, he was getting PISSED at those critters, though he wasn't when i took this pic

Long as he doesn't try to outdig an armadillo, he'll be fine.

Two things come to mind....

- Sounds like this smoke was too dry. 64's age well but should smoke fantastically out of the box.....if they are at the right humidity. Several of your comments would lead me to believe that this one was on the way dry side.
- "...kinda stanky, slightly bitter..." are words seldom used to describe 64's. Are you smoking too fast? That monster chop you laid down on the end could have opened it up a bit too much and encouraged "hot boxing" the smoke....which gets them too hot and will produce the flavors you are describing.

One thing I've learned is that cigars need....patience. Let them sit so their humidity gets to the proper level. Take you time with the cut, and do it right. Smoke gently, and savor the flavors. I know from personal experience that racing to finish a smoke before dinner rarely is as fulfilling as the same smoke, after dinner, with time to enjoy and relax.

I realize that folks have different tastes, but 64's are one of the best out there. Sorry your experience wasn't better....

Here are a couple of my Padron reviews:

Yeah BBS is right, that is a monster chop. I have always been under the assumption that torps were meant to have the smoke directed by the shape. Cutting all of that shape off and allowing that much smoke through may have been your problem. I have yet to have a bad '64. Next time you smoke one try taking off 3/8 of an inch or less and trim up if neccesary. Just my .02.

they aren't on the dry side, that i'm sure of, if anything they were too wet - got them a week ago and they were shipped w/ ont of those water pillow thingys. Yeah, i dunno wtf was up w/ my cut, that's not normal for me. It was quite tasty until well into the last 3rd, and it's normal for me to not like most cigars at that point.

It's good, no doubt, but i liked the DC Max better, but i need to smoke a few more before i really have an opinion. Oh, and i took about an hour and 10 min to smoke it...

and don't get me wrong, it wasn't bad, just wasn't great, we all have different perceptions.

Gator,

Nice review and great pics but I have a request. Could you please scale down your pictures some, please. It will make the review even more enjoyable to read if the reader does not have to scroll the window side to side while reading.

If i can, sure, but don't know why the pics you view are too big, mine is automatically scaled down to fit nicely. Is it a setting maybe? It says mine are like 1/3 of original size

It could be your taste buds just don't like Padrons... so stop buying them :D

For what it's worth, the images are auto-scaled on my browser as well...

Nice review!

BBS is probably righ about smoking this guy too fast. Every Padron anny I've ever smoked had the easiest draw ever. This probably made you smoke it too quick. Everything you said about it sounded tasty until the last 1/3.

Maybe i did smoke it too fast, didn't think i did, but i don't have near the experience w/ cigars that BBS has, so next time i'll slow it down some mo and not take such a big cut (still don't know why i hacked it that hard)

Just finished a PAN exclusivo with about a year on it and it was delicious with deep complexity and a finish that will make you burn your fingers.

I am sorry to hear you had a less than stellar PAN Torp, I am fortunate that all of the one's I have smoked (many) have all been great. I hope that this does not leave a bad taste in your mouth (no pundt) intended.

Damn, that's almost poetic :D
Great post BBS!

Thanks for the review Gator. Try the maddie next. SOOOOOOOOOO YUMMY

i tried a PAM Principe last night, and DAYUM, that was a great smoke, amazing some of the bursts of flavor it had! I guess my taste buds were off the other night?

Good info mate, I am about to buy some of these for the first time and the cutting info you gave is excellent.

Thanks for trying. I don't think I have posted a picture myself since the latest softeware upgrade so I am unsure where the "1/3" statement is coming from. Generally, since I use Photobucket, I have to re-size my picture there, at the host site.
