O.K., this is my first review so be gentle. I picked this up yesterday at the local B&M and smoked it last night. I let it sit out for a few hours to firm it up as it was a tad bit soft on the pinch test. Upon initial exam it was flawless. Excellent construction.
The Libation of Choice:
Prelight:
The cigar had a beautiful sweet and natural aroma to it as I put it to the nose. I shaved the cap with my Davidoff Zino double bladed cutter (3 years old and still giving great cuts), and checked the draw which was perfect with very little resistance. I toasted the foot with my Prometheus torch lighter and let it rest a moment.
The First Inch:
The initial flavors were raw and tasted rather earthy. Thick smoke was present immediately. There were some grassy notes and thoughts of straw came to mind.
Moving On...
As I progressed the flavor intensified rather quickly. The raw flavors stayed but had become more pronounced. The ash was even and strong.
Opening Up Now:
At this point the flavors began to change some. The smoke lost some of its raw characteristics and minimal spice was detected. Small amounts of toasty flavors were present and I was thinking about roasted nuts. Smoke was billowing at this point and and I was in awe at how much there was.
A Self Portrait of Sorts:
The Final Third:
I removed the band at this point and opened up my second beer. Toasty notes continued but they did not grow. A smoothness was present and the tastes all merged into one the was slightly more complex and tasted finally like, well... tobacco. It was enjoyable to say the least.
Conclusion
This was a great cigar. What my review lacks in description is solely due to my inexperience as a reviewer. This was the first time I tried this size and I loved it for what it was, a two beer smoke. Next time I will choose a different beer because it did not add to the experience. Not sure what though. This reaffirms for me though that I prefer the 1964 in maduro as I feel it lends to a deeper and less raw experience for the palate. Hope this helps. Thanks.
