Yesterday I picked up a '26 #2 and '64 torpedo while out-of-town . . . both with maduro wrappers. Well, I just couldn't resist the temptation and I wanted to see what all the fuss was about, so I little the '26 up after lunch and the '64 later this afternoon.

The '26 was everything folks claim. Pre-light, it had a terrific, full tobacco smell . . . with a hint of barnyard. The wrapper was perfect . . . oily but not too much. My only complaint about the construction of either stick is that I'm not that big a fan of the defined box press, but that's just a personal preference. The cut was smooth and light effortless. I thought the draw was about as perfect as possible. The first third was full of wood and spice, with a beautiful, evenly burning ash that held on for about 1.5". The cigar was strong and full-bodied, but not to a negative . . . it was just right. There was also a subtle sweetness. The 2nd third was creamy, with a nice coffee taste that slowly turned spicy into the final third of the stogie. I thought the last portions were fantastic! There were nice earthy tones to go along with the peppery spices. Close to the end tastes of parched nuts started to prevail. This cigar was awesome and well-deserving of all the hype . . . full flavors with just the right amount of kick to it. It burned perfectly until I couldn't hold it any more.

Unfortunately, my experience with the '64 torpedo was not as pleasant. Things started off well. The stick was basically identical to the '26 in appearance and burn. Pre-light, it had a fainter smell of tobacco, which is about the only difference I noticed. The stogie lit nicely and the first 10 puffs or so were very nice. At the start, it appeared a little sweeter than the '26. The stick was not as spicy as the '26, but about an inch or so in the taste changed to a dull wood taste. To be honest, the 2nd third was a dud . . . mainly just a smokey taste. If this weren't such a highly regarded stick and about $15, I would have ditched it. Luckily, I did not and finished it off. To its credit, the last third was very nice. The spice started to kick up to a similar level of the '26, but without the coffee taste to go with it. It burned until I couldn't hold it either.

I paid less that $2 more for the '26 and thought it was leagues above the '64. I hope I picked a dud, but I was very disappointed with the latter. The '26 was perfect. The '64 was worse that most $4 sticks I have and and not nearly the stick as the Padron #3000 I smoked last week. I intend to give it another shot, maybe in a different size, but for the money, I will put a few more bucks in and get the '26, or just smoke my #2000's.

Nice review. The '26 #2 maduro is my favorite in all of there lines (except the 80th of course). But with the tapered end on the #2 I think the draw and whole smoking experience in all is way better than the others. And for a couple of bucks more than a '64, I agree, spend the extra 2 dollars.

Both are great cigars IMHO. Try them again, multiple times from different sources to be sure. Switch up the order as well. Good Luck!
