Smoked both of these last night. They were both constructed well, esp the Ovation, burned well but, the Cusano had a lot more smoke than the Ovation. The jury is still out on both of these cigars. While i did not notice that they were burning hot, or that I was smoking to fast, they both left a strong somewhat harsh taste in the back of my throat that caused me to cough more than once.
Is this typical of Maduro wraps? Or is it just something with these two lines?
I still have a few Ovations left, I will let them sit for a while and go back to them again just to be fair.
Cusano 18 Paired Maduro
Size: 5 x 50
Shape: Robusto
Wrapper: Conn. Broadleaf
Filler: D.R., Brazil
Binder: Dom. Rep.
This was smoked with a few bottles of Ice cold water, as it was still around 95 at 11pm here in downtown Baghdad.
The occasion; the Thursday night trivia fund raiser held by the British and Australian Army (a great time, and a great cause)
Pre light went very well, the cigar had a nice deep "cigar" smell as it came out of the cello. It looked great, but had a small bit of damage at the foot from carrying it in my pocket during the drive over to the Brit compound. The wrap was smooth and a deep brown, and I was rewarded with a nice hint of earthy goodness as I inhaled. The cut went well and the pre-light draw was super. So far this was one of the best beginnings I have had.
The light was somewhat problematic; wind and a almost empty lighter gave me some trouble, but like all good soldiers I kept charging, and within no-time I was drawing super thick clouds of white smoke...Then it hit me, the first of a few coughing fits. I felt like the first time I lit up some....well anyway
During the whole cigar, I was getting this taste that was hard to place. The only thing that I can say comes close is horseradish, not that it tasted like that, but it affected my throat and sinus passages the same way.
1/3 was really good, after I was able to get past the horseradish, it left a great after taste in my mouth. Toward the end of the 1/3-1/2 I could feel the buzz starting, so I decided to slow down a bit. I also hoped this would ease the regular coughing fits.
2/3 I had a Little trouble keeping it lit at this point, partly because I had slowed down, and partly because my trivia team was only 1/2 point out of first place (we have never won) so I was trying to answer some of the questions. The taste remained the same until the end and the horseradish never left the profile
Finish I took this to about 3/4 of an inch, the nic buzz was mild, I think because I had slowed down, and all in all it was not a bad smoke IMHO. Maybe it just need some more bed time.
edit to add review, thx wurm, don't know what I was thinking
