So, as promised from the Intro thread

the problem - This guy needs to store cigars, quick

the issues 1. limited time ( cant wait for a humi to be mailed)
2. avg daily temp = 115 and climbing / avg daily humidity = 10% the room where i live is much cooler, and a bit more humid unsure of the numbers
3. Supplies - ammo cans, used cigar boxes, tupperware, bottled water, various caps and sponges

ok, now everyone wipe your eys, and catch your breath....didnt know laughing could heart did ya....

lets see what we can do

my idea

line a large tupperware with the cigar boxes, place a damp sponge on a plastic lid, and maybe very small needle holes in the tupperware lid for some air exchange.....

That'll work in the short haul. Send me your APO address and I'll get you some beads, you'll need some distilled water for them.

It's better'n nothing that's for sure.

I seem to recall that salt testing methods create a constand steady RH of 75, would that be a good call considering the circumstances at least until some beads make it to our broheim here's location?

If it makes sense to more than just me, take a pile of salt (maybe a half cup or cup) and put it in a container of sorts, with just enough water to turn it into a very firm slurry (you can push on the surface of this mixture and get a firm resistance). The salt should release water at 75% RH which is a bit high, but it's steady, which I suspect would be better than just water and a sponge. Can someone let me know if this assumption is solid logic (since I've never had to do this before)

Thanks,
Rob

For distilled water you can utilize the steam from any boiling pot of water. Put a clean lid over your boiling water until some condensation has formed, and there's your distilled water.

thats a lot of salt, people are going to be mad in the chow hall when i take all the shakers

and i think i can get distilled water, we use it for our batteries in the Hummers

as for beads...if i get those can i just use the cigar box, I can get some pretty nice ones here, the Iraqi store owners just throw them away

Like I said PM me you name and address and I'll get something out to you.

Do not use the salt test to create a humid enviroment for your cigars. What you described with the sponge set up will work fine for short durations. Don't saturate the sponge... just dampen it. The reason I say short durations is with the sponge you have no way to "regulate" the humidity so long term will most likely over or under humidify them.

Send Tony your APO..... once you get the beads you'll have no problems.

Humi bags work great for approx 2-3 months and the Fuente Humi bags work great for about 5-6 months...... another possible option but would have to be ordered.

Yep, go see your motor chief or motor SGT, whoever you're more comfortable talking to. He will have "deionized water" Get yourself a jug and your set with the water.

The tupperware will do fine until maybe you can get a cooler inbound. Most cigar boxes won't have the seal you'll need, so I'd stay away from that route if possible. Not sure what FOB you're on, but if you can get to the local PX, you can grab a cooler for cheap. Let the very generous BOTL tone-ny hook you up with some beads and you'll be stylin'.

We made humidors out of ammo cans (as posted above), coolers, and bags. It all works. I'm kind of typing in a hurry because I need to get out the door, but I hope this helps.

Again, as stated in my welcome to your intro. I just got back from there in November and had no issues on storage and getting cigars in once I got settled. You just need to know the route to go, sounds like the guys have given you some good info so far though. Just let us know what else you need.

Stay safe

Once again

Thanks!!!!

and so everyone knows, I PM'ed Tone-ny

Speaking as a newbie trying to understand, wouldn't you NOT want to punch holes in the lid to prevent humidity from escaping?

Also, what should be done to regulate temperature in those kinds of environments?

Shade and prayer.

outside of that I don't think there is much he can do.

Right now I think temp. will be the least of his problems. Trying to keep the humidity at an acceptable level will be a challenge until he can get the proper supplies. Even once he gets what he needs I don't know if he will be able to keep them cool enough to make sure beetles won't be a problem.

Brickhouse, when you were over there was there really anything you could do for the temp? And were beetles a problem?

That's kind of why I was curious what FOB he was on. I was on a FOB that allowed me to have my own 8x10 room and it's own window unit A/C. So regardless of how hot it was outside, my room remained chilly most of the time and therefore beetles weren't an issue.

But it depends on location. Some areas of Iraq are built up more than others. Hopefully he has a room in a trailer that has A/C.

I'm guessing most of our brothers and sisters playing in the sand are more concerned about keeping them humidified..... wouldn't think they would be storing quantities of cigars long enough to be extremely concern about beetles. Even so, its not like beetles will swiss cheese all of your cigars over night. First sign of a beetle calls for death by fire. :) There is nothing wrong with smoking a cigar with beetles or beetle eggs and most of you, if you smoke cigars regularly, already have.

Of course idealy keeping the cigars in a cool place is best but sometimes you have to play the hand you're dealt.

Tmayeux20 - gods speed and thank you.

Temp will, or should, not be a problem. I am hold up in the "Green Zone" and all though I do live in a large building with about 30 other solders it stays pretty chilly in here.

My biggest issue will be humidity, and trying to teach the Iraqi vendors not to just throw out a box of smokes onto the counter and call it good....

Just remember bro, buyer beware. I was at Liberty, and busted the vendor there for fakes....Cohibas, HDMs, Monte's, the whole lot...all fake. I really think you're better off getting a hold of a few reputable online vendors stateside and having them shipped, it worked very well for me.

If you want, I can send you a list of vendors that can certainly be trusted.

That list would be a geat help, I am just down the road, and I am sure the same thing is going on here. I have been looking but the army does not seem to offer a class in spotting fakes, where can i find this kinda stuff out
