Remeber that unassuming but scrappy-as-heck kid you went to school with? You know, the one who went about 98 pounds soaking wet but could thump the heck out of darn near anyone? Now think of that guy at about 40. He's calmed down a bit, but if you push hard enough he'll still kick some arse. That's the Power Ranger.
I looked the stubby bugger over, appreciated the smooth and dark wrapper, clipped and fired up. Nice draw, initial hints of dark roasted coffee for the first few puffs, and a little spice.
The smoke from the xXx was intersting and dense. On a day w/ out wind you would almost think you could spit out a little brick of smoke.
At mid-stick the Opus started to settle into its stride and take on some significant spice. Tasty. A bit of leather and again, coffee. I also started to catch a little buzz. Ahhhhhh.
The ash held right up to the label and came off in a solid chunk. The last two puffs were that trademark Opus jalapeno punch. Push too much further and you might see that fired up, roughneck of days gone by.
In conclusion, this is a great little smoke. My experience was with a 1999, so the harshness I've heard of from others mellowed. I could see things getting a bit hairey on a younger stick, but I was very impressed. This is a great one for walking the dog, catching a quick beer on the porch, or just when you aren't in the mood for an hour long smoke.
Give the scrappy little guy a shot ...especially if he's aged a bit. You'll be surprised how he has mellowed in mid-life
