Opus X Question

Hoping someone can help with a question I have regarding the Pous X Supper Bellies. I have a few in my humidor only going on 3 months now. I smoked 1 when I first acquired them and was disappointed--poor construction with ash flares the whole way down, a long runner, and repeated relightings required, flat taste that lacked copmlexity. I smoked another only yesterday now with 3 months on it and it was marginally better. Certainly a bit more moist which led to a better smoke construction-wise and slightly better more complex taste. Yet it was still disappointing. So the question: will these get better with more time on them or are these a victim of the marketing hype and not really what they are cracked up to be? Any thoughts?

Poor construction and bad burn doesn't sound like any Opus I've ever had. ???

Could they not have been cared for well wherever you got them? I'm not an expert or a complete believer in all the hype, but you can't knock the construction on Opus in my experience.

I'm sure moki will chime in here with more info..

Both. These things usually show up at the stores sloppy wet and very young. In my experience with them it takes about a year for the worm to begin to turn.

Definitely overhyped but still a pretty good cigar.

Regarding the taste, that's up to you -- they certainly are distinctive, but not everyone likes the same thing.

As for the construction issues, that surprises me -- Opus are extremely well made, generally speaking -- but younger Opus can indeed have burn issues, they are so oily it can require relights. Just a characteristic of the cigar. I've had one fresh off of the line, they are ridiculously oily -- they age 'em for a year before they get to you.

I guess I'd have to ask where you got the sticks from? Right from a dealer, or via trade with someone?

:D Being the Opus whore that I am, these gentlemen have hit the nail on the head.

It's definitely not everyone's cigar and I always age mine for several months at 65/65 to let them dry out a bit. I love Opus but that's me.

My advice to you is sit on them a while and try another in a few months. Maybe your experience will change. I always gave a cigar several chances under different conditions before I decide if I like them or not. I will also add I have never had a construction problem with any Opus and I've gone through right many of them.

Good luck!

I've never smoked an Opus X so I have no input :0 . But I will be savoring in the Opus flavor profile soon because I have 6 lined up in the humi. Been there for a couple months and I feel it's time to smoke one. I will eventually see what it's like to smoke one with some age on it (2-3 years) and compare what I like better. I'll let you know in 2-3 years if I perfer age or not :p

Maybe they weren't real Pous X check the label, sometime the forgers misspell the name. :sign:

Thanks for the responses. I'm certainly giving up onthem by any means and will sit on them for a while. As to where they were pruchased, I got them from a friend who purchased them on-line (I got 6 via trade and have 4 left). My friend I trust, but I have begun to wonder (my previous type not withstanding) as to whether its possible to tell if he (and I) were taken by fake Opus X's. Any thoughts on wehter it's possible to tell. I am reticent to dis the on-line reatailer without proof and I am by no means very familiar with the Opus line.

:D About a month ago, I woulda said "Overhyped, overpriced, not that great construction, don't waste your time......" blah blah.....

However after giving them a few more chances, I'm slowly becoming a fan but I tell ya, my first experiences were like yours, lousy burn, stems, etc. the things that really tick me off with cigars.

BUT, recently I've tried a few again to give them a second chance and they've all been perfect AND I am starting to really enjoy their flavor and full-body (knock you on your butt :0 )

So, don't write 'em off as a brand yet. I think they're a great cigar to treat yourself to every now and then. Even if I could afford to, I would not make them an "everyday" smoke because I'd probably wind up getting sick of them.

Hopefully you'll have better luck with the ones you have left and again, don't let this first bad experience cause you to write them off as lousy cigars.

I doubt they were fake, but who knows how many hands they went through, and how they were stored, if you friend bought them online. My suggestion is do a trade with me; if you don't like the Opus I send you, you probably don't like Opus X cigars.

Not that I have any particularly special Opus or anything, but I know where they've been, and how they've been smoking.

I've had some Opus X's that were traded to me that were absolutely horrible -- lord knows what happened to them, but if they were the only Opus I'd ever smoked, I'd be put off of the brand too. Don't let it happen to you! ;)

My wife got pissed at me one day on our trip to Florida in late June/early July. She twisted up and generally mangled about 10 cigars.......an Opus X being one of them.

I keep that twisted/mangled Opus X on the sunvisor of my truck....#1 to remind me of my wife's ability to go ape **** (and how I should avoid that situation at all costs), and #2 to keep a constant reminder of what a quality cigar is.

That Opus X Robusto, in its ravaged condition, is still probably better than 65% of most smokes in optimum condition. I'll bet if I torched it, the few seconds before it blew up in my face, would be well worth the anguish of the local burn center.

hrm... I wonder if Loraina Bobbit ever flew into a rage and twisted up her husband's cigars...

you never know, gawntrail, the cigars might just be a warm up... your penis is next.

I suggest running. ;)

Maybe, but I'm the only one that knows the combination to the house safe :p

And even if someone gets in it, they'll need to figure out the code in order to figure out which safety deposit boxes, in which bank, has what in them :0

C'mon Coach, we all know the combo to the safe is RIGHT 41, RIGHT 41, LEFT 15 HIKE (0) :p :p :p

I was referring to the Opus he sent you

Marito and I did a trade, and he tossed in one of his Opus X Super Belicosos for me to try, because he'd been disappointed with the cigar.

I sparked it up a few minutes ago; I can't answer any of his construction complaints, because I didn't burn it for more than an inch or so before mashed it into the ground and tossed it into the dumpster.

It's right up there as one of the worst Opus X cigars I've ever smoked; only nascent hints of the Opus X flavor were present. The cigar had a bitter aftertaste that was akin to a mixture of petroleum and unripe lemon, with hints of rubbing alcohol. It was harsh, and rather nasty.
I guess really it was just a gift as he "tossed in" the bad smoke. Anyway I bought a couple Opus a few years ago and had a similar experience to Marito's. It wasn't as bad as this batch but not a good smoke by any means. I rarely go back to that shop anymore.
I meant no reflection on Marito if anyone took it that way. It is just so helpful to get this sort of info.
