This thread was going to be called "First negative Opus experience." But the Fuentes came through again.

See at first the cigar wasn't that great. Didn't want to stay lit had a slightly harsh and acrid taste. I actually tasted tar/asphalt in the first 1/4." Burn wasn't great in the beginning either. Kind of uneven at times. I mean never terrible, but just not Opus-like.

The first half wasn't BAD per se, just not $8 good.

I just kept smoking it and smoking it and started to get down near the band. Slid the band back and I was finally rewarded with the well-known sweetish Opus taste that aficionados know and love.

Nubbed it and now I'm happy!

Maybe it's harder to make such a small cigar be a terrific cigar. Would like to hear the experiences of others with this small parejo.

I would say this cigar was BARELY worth it since I paid MSRP. If I had really killed myself or paid way above MSRP I would be pissed.

was that the perfection # 5. I have 2 and that is one the other is the robusto. I have yet to smoke them.

Yep "perfexcion" No. 5 the small one. It's like 4 1/2 X 42 or something.

Opus = Overpriced Piece Uv Sh!t :p :D

Sorry, couldn't help myself. Good cigar? You bet! Overpriced? Uh huh :(

I've smoked boxes of the #5 and have never had the harsh start that you described. It's one of my four favorite size OpusX (the others being the Power Ranger, Supper Beli, and Petite Lancero).

But it can happen. Bummer.

That said, sometimes Opus will burn uneven or will need some relighting. I've found that can be more from overhumidification. As of the last year or so, I keep everything at 63-64% and this helps not only my Opus, but all my smokes.

I had a #5 last night for the first time at a poker game -- guy there gave it to me. It was a nice cigar, I enjoyed it quite a bit. It did taste a tad harsh, but it might also be because I had 2 cigars before I had that one! :D
