Opus X Double Robusto 5 3/4 x 52

This stick and a similar companion were gifted to me by stepthirteen for winning a contest he posted. Thanks to Jim for the opportunity to sample this amazing stick!

Lovely sheen to the toothy wrapper, 2 small veins, and as beautiful a triple cap as I have ever seen.

Quite consistently firm end to end with a nice bunching visible at the foot.

After clipping the cap I found the draw to be perfect, not too tight or too loose. After toasting and lighting the initial flavors were nuts and cedar, rich and smooth with a slight herbal aftertaste and fragrance noted. Copious amounts of smoke were produced with little effort. I often find myself double drawing to try to get enough smoke to taste the cigar. Not with this one!

At 1" the flavor was very rich and smooth aged tobacco taste with hints of licorice and spice in my nose, with the herbal notes decreasing.

At 2" the flavor was changing again. The herbal notes were continuing to decrease and a creamy character was emerging that reminded me of caramel. There were also hints of cocoa and chocolate present.

Halfway through and fifty five minutes of real pleasure have passed so quickly I hardly noticed the passage of time. The flavor continued to change with hints of black olive, creamy tapioca and cocoa present with hints of spice.

2 1/4 inch left and now the spiciness is increasing while the smooth and rich copious smoke reminds me of malted milk.

1 1/2 inch left and the flavor continues to change. The spiciness was increasing while the smooth and rich tobacco flavor continued to dominate.

1" left and the rich tobacco flavor continues to amaze me as the richness has continued to build and now pepper is emerging.

At about 3/4 inch the nub was getting quite hot to my lips and tongue and with 1 hour and 55 minutes having passed I let it go out.

Wow! What a truly remarkable stick! Rich, creamy and smooth from end to end, with flavor that constantly changed and developed as only a few I have smoked have done. I must say I now understand what all the Opus fuss is about.

Now if I could only find a box at MSRP!! LOL!!!

Great review, Dave.

Not sure how rested the one Step sent along was, but I will say that with a couple of years of nap time, these baby's are usually even more special. One of the best out there, if the flavor profile is up your alley. I usually buy a few when I can get them at or close to retail and put them to bed. A couple of years down the road.....bliss.....

Best Regards - B.B.S.

Somehow, I believe you!
I don't know how rested it was but I would love to put several down for an extended rest.

When anyone finds them at or close to MSRP I would be grateful for the lead or grab them for me and I will gladly trade for other sticks or cash!

Simply fantastic review Dave!! I am glad you enjoyed this stick!! You are now under the spell, so relinquish all power and search for the Opus. I am not really sure of the age on this stick it is not more than a year old, but I cannot say for sure. I completely agree with Tom I smoked an Opus from 2000 and it was magnificent!! Again great review!

Sounds like you had quite a complex cigar there! Nice review.

Looks like it was one of the cigars that came in the 3 pack tins? If that is the case, and if
memory serves me right, they had some age upon release.

Awesome review Dave I have a couple on the way and cannot wait to have my first Opus experience

Best Regards
Don

And just like that Stepthirteen takes down another one. He got me a few months ago, and now Dave.

They were boxed. Might have been 50 count, can't remember for sure. I think they were $13.50 locally. Nice cigar and nice review too. I really prefer smaller gauge Opus, but the double robustos were a pleassant suprise being stronger than expected for thier gauge. Better blends?

VERY nice review, Dave. GREAT pics. Any Opus is a tremendous smoke IMHO.
Many people don't like them, but I find them to have a totally unique flavor that I like a lot :D :D

The double Robusto's came in varnished boxes of 42, if I am not mistaken Christmas 2007 was the first release of these other then in the Opus 22's other limited production stuff.

The opus that comes in the metal tins are the Perfect X, Reserva De Chateau's and the Robusto's.

I smoked a few of these and they are imo by far one of the better opus's out there other than the PL and #2's
