Hello this is my first time here, good site.. Newby here, and like all newbie’s I fell into the hype. I picked up one of those beauties. the opus x 4.5" I think.. At first it was strong but yet smooth to the throat. It wasn’t harsh at all for such a strong cigar... I immediately fell in love with it. Because so far all I have had are maduros (i think that’s right) dark cigars. I love the taste but better yet I love the buzz.. Unfortunately I’ve had to put up with some harshness. This opus x was awesome to say the least. For me words can’t describe this fantastic cigar. It was great lighting up, very easy. First draw was awesome. Inch after inch the ash built then about half way thru it developed so much oil around the punched hole i made. That I started to swallow it.. WOW the buzz i got off of that. But dam it was way over whelming. I put it down for about 15min then picked it up cleaned the end and lit it up again. All that oil clogged it up. So i had it cut, and lite. About 1/4 left, the oil built up again, OOPs i swallowed some more again. By now i have a green face with a spinning head.. But loved the BUZZ.. lol we went across the street to eat and was fine after that.. Is this normal? Has this happened to anybody else? Or is it just Opus? I’m talking about the oil build up of course.

Hey man...welcome to the site...I'm sure you'll enjoy it. I've smoked my fair share of Opus, all sizes, and I must say that while I've had a few that were a bit on the slick side, I've never had that much oil build up. My suggestion is try a few more and see if you still have that problem.

Was it a #4? I noticed some problems with the #4's I had. ???

The oily nature of Opus X cigars is quite characteristic. Indeed, it's been getting worse over the years, Fuente has started aging Opus a full year before they ship 'em to customers because of this. Each year when they replant the seeds, the plant has morphed yet a bit more to become even more oily.

Your best bet is either to put up with having to relight the things, or let them rest for a year or two before smoking 'em. Sucks, but that's just the way it is... treat 'em like you do fine Cubans, and let 'em rest for a year or three before you smoke 'em... that or have a lighter handy! :)

Part of it also has to do with how you smoke. If you keep the cigar in your mouth, and continually puff away, it will not go out. If you leave a fresh Opus resting in your ashtray, yeah, it'll probably go out after 5-10 minutes.

Welcome to CP!

Just a thought, but maybe try using a cutter instead of a punch, it would give you a larger opening and it could help eliminate your build up?

That sounds more like a tar build-up than oil. I have noted with some full-bodied torpedos (I don't punch, so don't run into this with parejos), I will get a tar build-up. The tar is very bitter and yes, it will give you a buzz as it concentrates the remaining nicotine.

To answer your questions...Yes, I've had this happen. No, it is not just Opus. No, I would not say that this is a normal occurance, but it does happen on occasion.

I agree with Cameroon4me, try clipping instead of punching. That should help with the buldup. Won't necessarily eliminate it, but should help.

I've posted several threads with the same problem, and if you search around you'll even see pics.

For me the cigars with the most capacity for tar build-up are Anejos, followed closely by Opus. I think I may have gotten tar out of a Joya de Nicaragua Antano too.

It has to do with the wetness of the stick, the age, and the cut.

If you have a cigar that is pretty fresh, stored at 70 degrees, and a relatively small hole, you're going to get tar. Personally I kind of get a kick out of it, and my mouth rarely touches the inside of the hole from the punch.

I guess I'll find out in a couple of years if aging helps; but I'm not going to voluntarily stop smoking Opus !

Thanks guys your advised helped. I tried the opus once more last night and WOW cutting made a world of difference.. not sure if the size did it or not. My first one was a rather small and very small ringed. Last night I was eating at a restaurant and when we finished we took a walk around the area. I found a cigar shop with a rather large sign. “We have opus”. So of course I went in. I picked up a torpedo #4 and I had it cut. I also think it had to do with how they had it stored. It was outside there humidor in a cubby hole. So it was in low humidity. Im guessing around 60-65%. So it was perfect not dry, not wet, and no oils building up. I love the Opus. Best part my wife loved the smell and said well if your going to smoke pick opus regardless of its price. YES MAM..
To me its going to be hard to top this one, but I like trying out different once. I just picked up CAO Brazilia, Diamond Crown Maximus, Arturo Fuente Hemingway, and Hoya de Monteray Excalibur 1066. ive had the Excalibur before but it wasn’t to my liking. I got this one as a gift so im going to give it another try.
