Hey Jim...Remember the days when we had to put limits on these?

If I wasn't involved in something else, i would have snatched these up in a heart beat. But alas I am not free and clear till Sept.

How many brands were out there...back then?

How many GOOD brands were out there?

???

;)

Wouldn't you say that running their company like that has attributed to the loss of their market share?

I doubt there's much of a loss of their market share. It's just that Opus isn't selling as fast now. Whether it's from more availability or less demand is certainly a good topic for discussion, though.

That depends. There's too much data that would have to go into the equation...and I'm not a statistitan.

The number of cigars smokers, the number of brands, the number of GOOD brands(even more variable), the number of cigars produced...all then and now stats.

The original answer I stated is based on my own habits and from what the boards are talking about/doing.

A great thing about CP is it's history. Go back an look at the 'cigar discussion' threads, then an now...lots of insight into trends and habits ;) !!!

Well... also there has been a massive global drop in consumer purchasing of cigars over the last few years. When most people have to choose between the water bill and some opus, they go the responsible route.

I'm thinking this, and what Gary is saying might have some merit!

As Gary said if you go back and look through the history of just the sale threads here................... You can see a big difference. I personally can remember about three years ago when sales for Opus, or Anejo would go up you had to be pretty quick on your feet, and most of the time you had to be the first to see the thread and respond. Nowadays, the threads last quite a bit longer and you sometimes see a price drop on an already good price before they move.

I’ve seen and heard of the same thing happening in shops. Opus might sit on the shelf for a couple weeks unsold at prices within a few dollars of MSRP, when they used to be sold out in less than a day’s time. I think there is some merit to all of the facts mentioned. The quality of other cigars has increased, there are better “value” sticks on the market, there is a decline in cigar buying overall, and it seems (to me at least) that Opus pop up on the B/S/T forum more often at good prices. I still buy as many Opus as I can afford when they pop up for a good price, but I don’t find myself going as far out of my way as I once did to hunt them down, even though they have become one of my absolutely favorite cigars.

I've been watching and buying Opus the last 3 years. I have seen every problem possible when it comes to Opus. Whether its the common line or the CFCF boxes, there is a trend of going down hill. I hate to say it but its the truth. If you only buy 10 or so a year, the chances are you will be lucky. When you do what I do, the odds increase drastically. I just smoked a Anejo #48 that had a channel inside the filler almost the entire length of the cigar. I didn't run into these kind of problems 5 years ago. If I did, I don't remember it happening. But since 2007, I have seen way to many problems arise with my beloved Opus X. Too the point I decided I was better off with purchasing the CFCF boxes instead.

Now the bad news. Even the CFCF boxes are sliding down hill. The 2008 to present have had many screw ups in them. I had one CFCF box where the corner was broke. I had one cigar that it looked like someone took like a 1/16th " thick needle and poked a hole in a HTF cigar in the CFCF box. I will let the pictures give you some idea what I am talking about.

Above picture: After inspecting the coffins, I ran into this little gem. There was a bunch of others damaged in this CFCF box.

I don't collect the CFCF to collect. So most of the problems I've run into isn't a huge issue for me. The real problems I have is when it comes to the cigars like the one I shown with the crack after cutting it.
This is the direction the HTF Opus X have taken. We can not forget about my Opus x Power Ranger incident that happened in 2008. Maybe there is more Opus X now on the shelves simply because of the
Quality Control and Inspections have been severally lax. I went to my original B&M shop and was amazed that they had so many Opus X on the shelf as well. They started restricting the amount you could buy to the point they always have them in the shop now. :(

This has happened to me, usually when the cigars are a touch too dry. Perhaps you should check your humidity.

Not a problem I have. Since I do smoke Opus X all the time, this was a unique problem. Why you might ask. Its because I could have easily fit a Credit Card about half way though the cigar. This wasn't one of those dry cigars. I've bought a couple that did split when I cut them. None of those even resembled this particular problem. I tried getting a good picture of it but wasn't able too. I even tried getting a photo of the area I cut, you could see that a crevice went down into the cigar. These are hand made and I understand the risk. This wasn't a "normal" problem one finds with Opus X.

On a good note is if it was a humidity issue, all my Opus X would have repeated this incident. Fortunately this wasn't the case. Like I said if you buy as many Opus X as me, you will start seeing what I have over the last 3 years. Their Quality has gone down. Not just the common line but also the HTF ones as well. I have been saying this since late 2007 early 2008.

Perhaps your cutter was dull, leading to an over-compression of the head of the cigar, causing it to fracture.

Nope...try again. You can see a smooth cut on the cigar. If the cutter was dull, I'd have this problem with every cigar I have cut with it. This isn't the case either. Cutter is sharp. I've had cutters go dull before. Thus they are exchanged for a new one. I'm a long ways from needing this one replaced.
