One Type of Tobacco Per Pipe?

New pipe smoker here and have been reading stuff about people using one type of tobacco with each pipe they own. I just bought my first pipe, so should I just smoke one brand/type with this pipe or is it safe to try others. I might get hounded for this, but I started smoking Captain Black White out of my new pipe. Is it ok if I smoke other stuff in this pipe?

I'm in the same boat, bro. So far, I can't complain. I have a DiMonti that has served me well, off and on, for 15 years. More off than on, obviously. But I still haven't had a reason to replace it or add to it - yet.

I would be careful what all you smoke in it. If you like mild aromatics then I wouldn't suggest smoking a strong english in that same pipe. It could leave a ghost that could be hard to get rid of. And that goes vice-vers as well. I have several pipes and a couple are designated to only 1 tobacco, but the rest are not. The others I designate to either English or aromatic. Just my opinion.
Hope it helps you!

This is a problem I have been facing lately and it seems I'm going to have to have a lot of pipes before I can smoke whatever I want when I want. English Blends seem to be the biggest troublemakers due to the Latakia, it leaves a mean ghost in my experience. You could probably get by smoking aromatics, burly's and straight Virginia's all in the same pipe with little problem for the most part but buy a second pipe or a cheap cob or something if you want to branch out. As for vaper's I don't have the experience as far as ghosts are concerned but I suspect perique may be another troublemaker.

I dedicate each pipe to a certain type of tobacco (English blends, Virginia Blends, etc.), but I don't dedicate to a single blend except for one pipe in which I only smoke Westminster.

If you're in the experimenting phase (and I'm in that stage perpetually it seems) just buy several Missouri Meerschaum corncob pipes or even an inexpensive meerschaum. Given the proper care and maintenance, these pipes will last you several years. They won't really hold on to ghost flavors and they will allow you to find out what you really like in a clean (if you keep it that way) pipe.

You can use a single pipe for everything, but you'll never experience the tobacco as it should be experienced due to the cross flavoring that will occur. You can smoke through some ghosts, but some are pretty darn stubborn.

Good luck!

It's the size of the pipe for me. My small pipes, Dunhill group 4 or smaller, get Virgina flakes and Vapers. I don't mind the perique ghost, which isn't that bad and is complimentary in my opinion. My larger pipes get English blends, and Oriental blends ie. those with Latakia. Orientals with out Latakia can be safely smoked in my Virgina pipes. I hope. I do have one pipe devoted to Penzance, a Soren Danbark church warden, but that's very special tobacco, worthy of it's own pipe. I don't smoke aromatics. When in doubt use a Cob.

Doc.
