I recently received a magnificent selection of cigars in a trade. Friday night I decide that I am going to smoke the first one. How to choose? Trust me when I say that there are some fine smokes in this lot.
I chose the Oliva Master Blend Torpedo. A cigar that measures 6.5 x 52. This is a limited production release with a Nicaraguan filler and wrapper. Apparently only 15,000 boxes were produced. A handsome band and an additional artistic mark directly on the cigar making for a nice presentation.
I grab the cigar along with my laptop and head out to the back porch to play some poker as I always do when it is time to enjoy a serious cigar. I started out wanting to like this cigar because when I saw the box I wanted to buy them for that reason. Great looking box.
As I lit the cigar I was immediately disappointed. Very bitter. I almost threw it away after a half an inch. Almost like I lit it with a strange gas and was sucking in the fumes. Glad I didn’t toss it. It smoothed right out. What followed was very smooth and creamy without any smoky flavor at all. The last third I finally tasted what the cigar was all about. Nice and robust without the slightest hint of harshness. A strength that sneaks up on you and then you realize that you are smoking a nice cigar.
So, if you are looking for a nicely constructed stick with a strong presence without a bit of bite, this one is for you. A nice price also: They can be had at buymorecigars.com for $110. for a box of 20. And if you are a box fan and fan of great presentation, this may sway you to purchase a box.
