OK, so it was a great day here in C'ville yesterday; high in the low 70's. So I decided to grille up some dinner and have a smoke.
I decided to smoke the Oliva Master Blend II Torpedo. There has been some reviews of the robusto lately; but not of this vitola.
If you recall, there was quite a bit of difference between the RTDA sample of the robusto that Dawg gave me and the one I purchased from the local shop. I was wondering how the torpedo would fall into this discussion. I was also intrigued to try it since the torpedo is my favorite size of the MB1's.
OK, so here we go....
I purchased teh stick from a local shop for $11 (MSRP is $10 I think). It was wonderfully constructed. A medium brown wrapper, box pressed, pretty solid cigar. The prelight draw was perfect.
The light was smooth and we were off. I had noted that the Ribusto was very young and definately needed more time to rest. This cigar, while a little young, was much better than the robusto. The initial flavors were a smooth, earthy, sweetness. At first the flavors were very subtle (unlike the RTDA sample which was in-you-face from the start), but they picked up strength as it went. It was definately stronger than the MB1. The burn was really nice. The stick produced plenty of smoke and it had a flakey, off white ash.
The final third had much more pronounced flavors, but they were a bit at odd with each other. It also had a much younger, tanic taste. I have to say that they end of the smoke was not very enjoyable, but I think that could change with time.
Overall, I liked the cigar; especially when compared to the robusto. I will get a few more to let them sit awhile before giving it another go.
