A year ago I embarked on a journey of stinky discovery. No, I didn't take a bath, wiseguy.
I bought some cedrela odorata commonly called Spanish Cedar (although it is not Spanish or Cedar) to line my coolerdor. All they had was some severely weeping stock so I bought it since it was not fine woodworking I was interested in producing. Just some lengths wedged in the sides, bottom and top where feasible. I tried to keep the worst of the sap facing the cooler walls and not the cigars because you don't want this stuff coming in direct contact with the cigars! It wasn't difficult to arrange it.
First off this weeping stuff reeks. When I open my coolerdor the odor is intense. At the time I wanted to see if it would affect or accelerate aging. I stocked it with high quality bundles that would benefit from a year of aging anyway. Rocky Patel Sungrown Selects, Famous 3000, Fire and Oliva. They are all aging very nicely and are picking up some faint cedar notes, too. After a year they have aged very nicely. They seem older than a year. More like two or more.
I don't really have a control group but I think this cheap weeping stuff is doing it's job nicely. It turns your coolerdor into something quite a bit closer to a real humidor. Mission a success!
I'm calling it the Odoratador!
