2 weeks ago I get my firs humidor, I mean almost humidor because its a cigar box :p

dupontts5.jpg

Its whole mede of cedar (I was told so in a shop where I get it free to first bought pack of cigars) for sure its airtight but aftere 2 weeks I cant keep steady humidity. I think its because I use lame a'la humidifier. At first I put some cotton wool into 2 bottle caps. I had 65%-70% for 12 hour, then it felt to 55%-60%. In a cigar shop when I bought proffesionl hygrometr (Its the only profesional thing I have, but not for long... I hope) guy told me that normal humidifiers are made with some kind of 'floristic sponge' so I tooke some of it from the florist shop, but it works just like cotton :/

Is there anything I can do? besides buying viper seads for now ;)

Thanks for help :)

Michael,

Well I'd say one of your primary problems has to do with your humidor itself. Don't get me wrong, a lot of boxes can do fine as a humi, but if not in perfect condition they may not have the seal you need.

Are you sure you're getting a good seal on the box? If you have a ziplock back big enough, or a tupperware box....put the box inside that and seal it. See how the humidity does while in this environment.

If it holds, your problem is the box itself.

As for humidification. You need to visit www.cigarmony.com and get The Puck.

Hope some of this was helpful.

Hmm... I think I'll use your first advice then. I'll put my "humidor" into something for sure airtight ofcourse with my 2 sponge humidifiers and see what will happend. If there will be steady humidity, I'll have to buy proffesional humidor faster and then I'll not need The Puck ( I think) but when airtight 'something' will not help, it'll show that there is something wrong with humidifiers and I think I'll have to buy The Puck.

Hope I understood You like I should. :)

ps. When I let off humidors blanket it made this nice 'psssst' sound, so it looks to be airtight, but, I'll test just like You wrote :)

Thanks a lot
Michal

Michael,

Keep in mind, just because you have a humidor with a good seal, doesn't mean you'll be perfect everytime, unless you have a humidification system that is 2way (i.e. beads or The Puck).

Those green sponges will put out humidity all day, but they may over do it. The Puck and Beads will not only put out humidification, but once they reach a certain RH they will absorb anything over that. They are a great way to keep your humi balanced will little to no effort.

Otherwise, tight seal or not, you'll be checking and balancing your humidity a lot. Not that it can't be done, just much easier with a 2way system.

Lastly,

I failed to ask something in my first post. Are there 'gars in the box? If so, you're RH may be diving down a bit because they are absorbing the humidity. If not, then there really isn't much reason why it would dive down other than a bad seal.

Let me know how it works out.

So... it looks like I'll need The Puck or Beads even if I get a new full profesional humidor, right? They used to put in humidifiers green sponge, so it will work just like it works now, ok maybe a little better because of seal.

Yes, there are few cigars inside, but I put them there about 2 week ago, and I think they shouldn't be thirsty any more, should they?

And about humidity absorbing, I think it can be this cigar box. Maybe it was empty in a shop for few month and get dry. Now when I put there wet sponge box's wood is getting better. hmm...

Ok, I'll check if box is for sure seal like You wrote, and let You know.

After all, I think the bast way will be to buy some kind of new humi + TB or B :)

I think about this one. Its wooden with cedar inside, but its reather cheap (about 55$) and I think would be ok for first year of my new hobby :)

Welcome to CP.

Not to sway you in either way, but a coolidor is a excellant way to start out. Plenty of room and is dirt cheap. Just my 2 cents.

Amm... I'm not sure if I know what You exactly mean by coolidor :p (yes, its this language barrier ;) )
You mean this?

Yep, I've read it earlier but its look a little to complicated for me. I'll stay with buying new humi I think, neverthless thanks a lot for advise :p

Michal,

My advice to you is to consider purchasing from a site from the States that will ship to Poland - browsing in Warszawa, I noticed that your cigar accesories, especially humidors, are way over priced, at least, well above the American prices.

hmm... maybe You're right, but I think shiping cost will meke those prices similar. Shiping package (up to 5 pound) to Poland cost 20$ so its pretty much.

For example, pls check this one. Like I wrote its more less 55$ for wooden with cedar inside humi. Is it possible to buy one like this in US form about 20$-25$ ? If its possible, then I'll think about it.

But there is one more minus with buying in US. I'm waiting for my CD for a full month now. Its shiped from Honolulu but its US, right? :p

I'm a real newb, and the coolidor was not hard to set up. I got a smaller 28qt. I don't think you need the spanish cedar right away. I'm working on my humidity right now, but everything seems simple so far.

I've made an airtight test of my... I think i should call it box, not a humi :p
Yesterday evening I've made my humidifiers wet, closed the leak and sealed whole box with glue tape(?) and foil bag.
Usually next morning I had about 60% but today it was about 63% so it looks like Brick was right - this box only makes impression to be airtight, but its not :/
So I think in the begining of next month I'll buy the reall humi.

Thanks a lot for advices Brick.

Glad to hear you got it figured out Michal. Sorry about the outcome, but you're better off knowing.

In the meantime, maybe just use some tupperware or something to hold you over.

Ofcourse! 'Worst truth is better then the best lie' :)

Um... For reall, I do not understand what do You mean by 'tupperware' (nor my dictionary) but I'll stay for next 2-3 weeks with my method (get wet in the morning, get wet in the evening) its not 'time-eating' task, so play that way.

And about humidifier to new humi. You suggested to buy The Puck, why not Viper seads? I see that most of users recommend VS.

Hi Michal,

"Tupperware" means a type of plastic food storage container. It usually has a plastic lid that snaps on creating an air-tight, water-tight seal. Another brand is "Rubbermaid" or "Gladware" but any generic plastic container is suitable.

Many people use the beads with good results. The puck is an all in one humidifier device which includes beads inside of it.

Wilkey

Michal,

You don't need to put the box in a plastic container. What you might want consider is transfering the cigars from the box to a plastic container, if there is enough room in that plastic container to hold all of your cigars... at least until you get your humidor seasoned and ready to accept your cigars.
