Here's my first attempt at reviewing a cigar. I feel like my palate is starting to come along so I figured I'd try to post one up.
Brand: LA FLOR DOMINICANA LITTO GOMEZ DIEZ
Name: AMERICANO
Origin: Dominican Republic
Shape: CORONA
Wrapper: Dominican
Binder: Dominican
Filler: Dominican
Strength: FULL
Ring Gauge: 46
Length: 5.75
This is a cigar I've been eager to try since joining this site and reading through the Kingantz review thread. I finally got my hands on one so here it goes.
The heat has been brutal here in CT but there's finally a consistent breeze blowing off of Long Island sound. It's a perfect New England summer evening to head outside for a Sammy Smith Oatmeal Stout and a quality smoke.
The wrapper looks like worn leather, smooth, with few noticeable veins. The pre-light aroma of this cigar immediately sparks an image of those tiny boxes of raisins mom used to pack in my Dukes of Hazard lunch box. I cut the cigar with with my not-so-nice plastic cutter and do a pretty good job at butchering it, but hey I'm getting better. The pre-light draw again tastes of sweet raisins and rich tobacco.
I lit up the cigar with my butane torch and was immediately blasted with heavy pepper spice. For the first two inches of this smoke it was impossible for my weak palate decipher any noticeable flavor profile. Trying to exhale through my nose to get more flavor was definitely a mistake. It's spicy and harsh but my limited experience tells me this initial blast has the potential to lead me to the promise land.
The middle third of this smoke is absolute bliss. The spice has almost completely subsided to sweet buttery deliciousness with hints of Belgian waffles (yes waffles) and honey. The cigar is very strong for me but draw after draw the flavors intensify and I find myself having to use a little self control to keep from over doing it and ruining my experience. The cigar is burning nicely with no issues and a slightly flaky gray ash.
As I reached the final third of the cigar a bit of the spice returned but nowhere near as overwhelming as the start. The cigar never overheated and was a pleasure to smoke right down to the nub.
