I managed to squeeze in a little project yesterday/last night. I took the shelves out of a cabinet I bought to keep my pipes in and made a custom interior rack to replace them. It isn't showpiece quality, but it works well and looks pretty darn good with the doors closed. Here it is...

It will hold 26 pipes. The only thing I would change is to decrease the spacing between the rests for the bit and the rests for the bowls. It's a little too much of a gap for my shortest (and one of my favorite) pipes. If I ever make another I"ll just make two of the rows for the shorter pipes and one of them for the longer pipes. I'll probably refinish it one of these days when I have more time. The stain is a little blotchy and the filler didn't take the stain very well at all. Not bad for a day's work if I say so myself.

I drew up some scale drawings I can scan in if anyone else wants to attempt this. (Yeah, I'm a little strange. :D )

Thanks! It's not very often I get a whole day to concentrate on one thing. All total it took me about 5 actual hours (not counting the drying time for the stain). The method is very simple and I got it from a fella over on SF. His is being done on a much larger scale.

All you need is a table saw, and a router.

Wow!
That is freakin awesome.

Beats the hell out of my pile-o-pipes next to my desktop humi...

Where do you store the tobacco?

You did a great job on that rack Alan, seems to me you're a tad harsh on yourself!

Good job!

Rob

Thanks for all of the kind words. I'm going to redo it in oak this winter. The aspen really didn't take the stain very well, but it was cheap and easy for me to experiment with.

I have a little matching cabinet that sits below. Here's a pic of my "cellar" (I guess it is actually my basement ) and a closer look at the rack and my two prized pipes (Boswell Freehand and Fred Brandt Straight Grain Freehand with horn shank).

If only I could smoke down there...

AH! Those are glass-doors! I thought they were ceder-lined (and was VERY confused at what was going on w/ the Casa F bag...) I like it even more now!

That Brandt piece is gorgeous! Have any more pics of it? Looks like the bowl is HUGE!

It does have a pretty deep bowl. I cleaned up the stem a little (it was pretty oxidized when I got it) and was able to get the little dark spot you can barely see near the rim in one of the pics to come off with a little elbow grease. It's a beauty and it smokes very cool. I had a whole plan on getting into this, but I've abandoned that. smoke whichever pipe I feel like with whatever tobacco I choose. I've had nothing but very positive experiences so far.

Stunning.

The grain and finish remind me of a just poured Guinness.

Makes me want both a bowl AND a pint!
