Forget 200ct., go straight to a nice 300 if you have the room for it on a table somewhere and really want a humidor. Its about the same price and the extra room is nice. The only downside is all the empty space to keep properly humidified until it fills a little more, but a large overkill dose of climmax beads should help with that a lot. Climmax beads are the ONLY way to go for humidifacation.
This is my favorite that I have.
I think mine was around $130 from off of ebay. Mine is GREAT and I have seen them for less, but the constuction quality isn't always consistant so make sure you can return it if anything isn't exactly right and don't be afraid to if it comes to that. I REALLY love mine though and two or three other guys on the site I know have this one as well and really seem happy. I have also seen the same piece with a glass window in the top. I may have gone that route if I had seen it earlier, but perhaps not, it looks pretty dang good the way it is. The picture really doesn't do it justice, but then I may be biased here.
Having said all that though your first move being a college student on a budget may be a large Tuperware type tupidor with a hygrometer and the beads. It may not look as slick as a humidor, but it's cheap, practicle, and way more reliable then a cheap humi usually ever is. If need be you can always expand if the need arises into a igloo cooler type coolidor. Again, practicle, cheap and reliable.
Heres a link to
Climmax's Site
Bargain Humidors also is worth checking out. Some have had problems with service there, but they have a lot of things worth looking at and I've never had a problem with them.
Search around on the board here and I'm sure you'll quickly come up with lots of references to tupidors, coolidors and the like. Theres a whole section called The Humidor in fact you should probably spend some time looking through.
Oh, and save your pennies, this hobby gets WAY out of hand real fast.
Also, I almost forgot. STAY AWAY FROM CIGAR BID!!
IT'S THE DEVIL!!
No really though. Cigar bid is great, but the problem is you end up buying a lot of crap until you figure out what type of stuff you like. Once you start to figure out your tastes you end up looking back at all the garbage you bought at first before you knew. I would advise sticking to local shops where you can go with onsies and twosies till you get the hang of things. Hopefully you have some nice shops somewhere near by with a knowlegable staff. General tabbacco stores with a cigar closet usually aren't it. A regular cigar dedicated store with a wide selection is best if your lucky enough to have one anywhere in driving distances. A day trip to one is way better then just a low end general smoke shop usually.
Just my .02 worth.
