Hi,

Let me preface this by saying I have search the forums and have googled my topic as well.

I have been smoking cigars for about a month. I've always wanted to try them (I'm 43) but have always succumbed to popular thought surrounding the evils of smoking. But I have to say.. I am enjoying it thoroughly. There is an artistry, it seems, to cigars. How they are made.. the subtle nuances of the different smokes... I am looking forward to learning and enjoying more.

What I have noticed in the last couple of weeks is that sometimes after smoking, the next day, I will experience a pretty nasty sore throat. My theory, so far, is that I will get a cigar that I really enjoy (right now, Carolos Torano Casa Toranos) and I will smoke it right down to the nub. Ripping off the label and just letting it go until its nearly burning my lips because I just don't want to let it go. Other cigars.. I stop long before that. That is usually when I notice the sore throat the next day. I am wondering if its because the smoke gets hotter near the end? And maybe because I smoke it too long its burning my throat? Has anyone else experienced this? Is it best to smoke just to the label and then toss it?

Or.. could it be technique? Over smoking maybe? I read one comment where the person said they blocked their throat with their tongue when the took a draw. Is there a particular technique there?

Any thoughts? I appreciate any feedback.

All you need to do is drink some Vitamin C juice and that will help with the sore throat.

Most common form of juice with vitaminc is orange juice. Which is an acid. Don't be mean to the new guy lol

could be how long and how you smoke, or might be that you have a very strong/dark cigar. Could also be that you're new to smoking. Although I can't remember ever having a sore throat.

Are you inhaling? I would recommend not doing so on purpose at first if you are. Build up some tolerance and then you might be able to inhale. Another thing could be smoking too fast. I enjoy cigars much more when I "sip" them, as in smoking slowly. Puffing too hard or too frequently can cause a cigar to burn too hot and that can ruin the taste. Hope you get it figured out.

Smoke better cigars!

Echoing Moe's comments, perhaps you are inhaling a bit which I'd surmise could irritate your throat if you aren't used to it. Is there enough ventilation where you are smoking? Slowing down may help. I've never timed myself but I'd guess I take one puff about every minute or so.

And no, smoking the cigar to the nub is not a bad thing. It shows you really enjoyed the cigar, which is a good thing! However, when down to the nub reduce the amount of air you're pulling with each puff. In my experience taking a big puff off a nub will overheat the cherry and give you stronger/acrid smoke which could be giving you problems.

I think you will be fine once you build up a tolerance to cigar smoke which can be a little daunting. I would agree that you might want to buy a couple nice smokes and let them humidify and season and then see how you respond. Nothing worse than a dried out or un-seasoned cigar that tastes like petrified goat urine.....or anything from Thompson & CO.

You should switch to other brands with what you have tried. Perhaps, try milder ones. Then observe first its effects. But remember to learn the techniques when blowing the smoke. Never keep the cigar too long into your mouth.

Don't forget to gargle or brush your teeth after you smoke and wash your hands as well as the area around your lips.

Use mints after you smoke. And most of all, take Vitamin C and eat fruits which contain much of it for nicotine lowers your Vitamin C.

Smoking robs vitamin c from the body. One thing I learned on the Rocky Patel tour was to drink vitamin c. They gave up Watermelon juice and it helped with the sore throat. I keep cranberry juice at home and orange juice. Even the Halls Vitamin C drops work great. The pill form takes to long from my experience.

Smoking cigars can dry the mouth . . . add Scotch or bourbon! :whistling:

I sometimes wake up with a slightly baked feeling throat if I've had multiple cigars the night before, but I always start my day with an Airborne tablet in a glass of grapefruit juice and that takes care of it.

Try not to inhale . . . just swirl the smoke around in your mouth.
