Newbie Humidor Questions

So, I am looking into getting a humidor, but I had several questions before I make any sort of investment.

1. I don't normally have access to cigars besides the kind from walmart, I.E. Phillies, Swishers, and the like. So would I really need a humidor for those types of cigars?

2.If I did get a humidor, are there certain things/features I should look for?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give!

I've had really good luck HERE. Check out the imperfects.

Swishers, phillies, cigars bought at Walmart. I would say, you probably wouldn't really need a humi if that's the smokes you currently have. Also, stop buying from Walmart! :) Try Newby Sampler Trade. If you don't have anything to trade, just buy a sampler.

I made my humidor from a Coleman Cooler, doesn't look like much but it does a good job. I ordered Humidity beads from Cigarmony.com (they are kind of expensive but worth it) and just have cedar cigar boxes in the cooler. I deodorized the (new, smelled like plastic)by letting it sit 24 hours with mild bleach water and then let it air dry wide open for a day.

I didn't put any cigars in it until the empty boxes had a chance to come up to the humidity I wanted because the empty boxes will suck up all the moisture until they reach 70%.

Where are you located in Indiana?

First thing...Get rid of all tobacco products bought from WallyWorld. Like stated before, if you really have little access to a cigar shop, go to the Buy/Trade/Sell Forum and look at the Newbie Sampler Trade. Those guys took very good care of me when I first got here and they would no doubt take good care of you as well. As far as a humidor goes, always go bigger. I thought a 150 ct. was big enough for me but lo and behold I now have that thing stocked and also a full coolidor. This hobby will soon turn on you for the best leaving you to wonder what the hell happened. In the meantime, pull up a chair, light a smoke, open a beer, and gather all the info you can.

Just wanting to make sure here. When you say a 150ct., you mean it holds 150 cigars, right? Because that seems like a lot to keep at once, unless you're aging them.

 Little do ye know! If you're like the rest of us, after a while you'll think back to when you said, "Because that seems like a lot..." and have a good laugh  .

A 150ct humi won't actually hold 150 sticks. I bought a 300 ct and it actually only holds maybe 100...150 at the most (probably really pushing it at that). When they say holds 150, they're usually talking about smaller sticks (cigars).

If you're serious about cigars, pull up a chair and start reading. Tons of info on here. As stated before, and Lurch re-stated, do a newbie sampler. Perfect place to start!

I probably have over 400 sticks now, most of which I'll never get around to smoking. I'll give a bunch of them away to fellow BOTLs and age a bunch of the others. I'm gonna run a couple experiments with some cheaper sticks and some more expensive ones and see the difference in aging. Trust me. You think now that 150 is a lot. Wait until you get into this hobby and you'll see where we're coming from....

Hey im also a newbie looking to buy my first humidor. I know i will be told not to do this, but im looking for around a 150ct. I found one a like on cheaphumidors.com http://www.cheaphumidors.com/Merchant2/mer...Code=imperfects
that is the url for it. However on the right side it gives me the options for some upgrades. I hear everyone on here talking about the beads. Do you think that these upgrades are a waste of money and aside from the humidor itself, wat else should i look into buying to keep my sticks in good shape.

I got mine off Cheaphumidors and love it! No imperfections at all anywhere. Lots of folks on here have had the same experience with them. Check out Heartfelt and get some beads. Put in the dimensions of the humi in their calculator and it'll tell you how much you need (or what size tube). You can get the seasoning packets from them as well, if that's the way you want to go with seasoning. Also, recommend getting a digital hygrometer and one of their calibration kits. You should be good to go!

No, you don't need a humidor for those cigars. You need a trash can.

Doc.

On Heartfelt i see i can choose between 60% 65% and 70% humidity, which ones should i be looking at.

Most people prefer 65 beads. But only if you are going to buy real cigars. If you do, you must also take note that a humidor should always be at least 1/2 full or you will encounter humidity stability issues.

Haha, well said lurch! I have over 350 sticks now and even had to break out an old humidor i had discarded in storage.

If you plan on staying active around these parts or on any other cigar forums i'd recommend picking up some Heartfelt beads (maybe 1/2 pound) and starting a small tupperdor. When you outgrow that, you can get a cooler. And once you've filled a few of those, it'll be time to get your humi -- a cabinet humi, that is! LMAO!

I just got my humidor in the mail today. I am looking to get a digital hydro and on heartfelt it says that you can buy a calibration kit, does anyone know if this calibration elimates doing a salt test, or should the salt test still be done.

It does eliminate the salt test, and the kit can also be re-used for a certain amount of time. As long as you keep the zipper zipped, unlike myself  .

So, when you buy that next humi or opt for the coolidor in the next month or so :D , you can still use the calibration kit.
