Hi all... I'm a newbie to cigar smoking and to the forums... Ok a little background info... I'm 21 this year, still studying in University, living off a paltry allowance but deeply interested in cigars...

Up till now I've only had a dog rocket by the brand name of Phillies... :p

So I'm hoping for some advice on what cigars I should get to begin with. I'm working on a tight budget here (but planning to smoke one every week or so to control the expenses) and I prefer mild to medium and since I know nothing about cigars, what do you pros recommend?

And lastly please let me know if I'm breaking any rules (said or unsaid) in this forum and hope you all will be patient with me... Thanks!! :)

Welcome to CP. :D

First of all, throw away the Phillies.

A good first step up for folks on a low budget, IMHO, would be Fuente Curlyheads. They are mix fill, made from clippings from their higher end smokes. Fairly tasty for less than a couple bucks each.

Welcome Maddened!

You have got the cheap @ss cigar expert here. :D I am stiving to be the expert on cigars selling for $2.50/stick and below (by the box price).

Let me suggest several for you to try.

Drew Estate's La Veja Habana Fumas (blue ring/box) - These run $23 - $34 per box of 20, they are mixed filler but have a wonderful corojo wrapper.

La Finca Corona - I was in college during the "cigar boom" and smoked this brand for several years before their price shot up to $80+ a box after a good review in CI. They are back at their pre boom price of around $27 a box of 25.

Sancho Panza Double Maduro - I like the "Quixote" size which is a robusto. Although the cigar sells for around $3.50 in retail stores, you can get a box of 20 for under $45 shipped just about anywhere on the net. This is my current favorite "everyday cigar"

Padron 2000 Maduro - Think twice before picking one of these up: it will set a standard of expectation for all other cigars you smoke. You will likely have better cigars; but you will also have cigars that cost 3x as much that aren't as good. These are also around $3.50 a stick retail, and you should be able to find them for under $70 per box of 25 online.

Flor de Oliva - These are around $1.50 each retail. You can get a bundle of 25 for around $30 shipped. Until I discovered the Sancho Panza Double Maduro these were my favorite everyday cigars. I like the 5x52 torpedo size best.

La Flor del Caney - I recently split a box of these 3 ways with 2 coworkers. I was willing to risk the $10 on a cigar I hadn't tried a single of before. We ordered the "Bouquet" size which is a nice 5" double taper figurado. I am now wishing I had bought a whole box. The first one I tried burned flawlessly, not dropping ash until the band. It has a nice cameroon flavor, although it tastes a bit young. Once you are in this hobby up to your head, this would be a good cigar to age for a year in your humidor. Any size of this cigar is $30 per box of 25 from Mikescigars.com

This week I am going to try 2 other "$30 any size" offerings from Mikes: Lusitania by Perdomo Maduro, and Mantequilla X Maduro. Both of these came in boxes of 20 for the price. I have been fighting a cold otherwise I would have already tried them.

We are friendly almost all the time, especially now that the Politics forum is closed :p

Welcome! The gang of fellas here are great people and who are very knowledgable.

Hmmm...when I started smoking cigars I began with Fuente 858's and Padron. Padron quickly became one of my favorites. Just pick a few out when you go to a shop and try 'em out. Cigars are all personal opinion. I might like one that you may not like.

What Univserity are you attending?
