New to cigars

Well, I've been smoking cigars for a few years now (not often, and I usually resort to the gas station variety), and I've decided to step up my smoking purchases. I recently tried a Montecristo #4, and found it much better than the big green log I got at Petro-Can that tasted like manure. I'm not sure if it was a cigar or a rolled up flyer, regardless it made me as green as the wrapper.

Since I live in Canada, I must make my purchases wisely as tobacco prices are insane up here. The tobacconists charge far too much for me to experiment, so I've decided to delve into the online world of cigar shopping. I'm a little hesitant to make a purchase, as I would hate to be stuck with a schwack of cigars that taste like cardboard.

What cigar is your personal favorite? And by 'favorite', I mean 'deliciously affordable'. I'd hate to come off sounding broke, but it's unavoidable. I'm a cheap ass in search of a good cigar.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I'd like a cigar that's under $10, as any price in the online stores will be multiplied by 2 once it arrives at my doorstep.

How much did you pay for that Monte #4? Should be under $10. Should even be under $10Cdn.

I just went to Canada a few weeks back and the cigar prices were outrageous. Of course I was in Niagra Falls so I'm sure they jacked up the price for the American tourist. $3 cigars were $10 and $10 cigars were as much as $40. I'm not sure if all of Canada has such high prices but I'm thinking you would do much better buying online. My favorites are cheap: Ramone Allones, San Cristobal, get a few more bucks try some Cohiba Robusto's

Cigar prices are high in Canada because of taxes/duty.

The best place to buy them is to get a cheap last minute deal to Cuba and bring back as much as you can :D

I just made my first bigger order of cigars. I am new to cigars, and these seemed like good cigars for their prices. This is what I ordered:

A box of Quintero Brevas, Partagas Super Partagas and J.L Piedra Cremas. On top of that, a box of 10 RyJ Romeo No.1. I have tried two of these labels before and I liked em . Plus I've seen some member(s) here mention Brevas as a stick they smoke regularly. My coolidor will finally be put to use. Too bad I can't find Climmax beads

Yeah, I know :p

The problem is, I'm sure I sent him a mail almost a month ago, and still no answer! I wouldn't mind paying a bit for shipping and such, seeing as the beads should hold for a long time. And I live in Finland, international shipping needed! Until then, I will have to survive (actually my cigars will) with traditional humidification.

I'll second that, I sent an email on the 30th of August with no reply. Scratch my business.

I didn't pay for it, it was a gift from someone that just got back from Cuba. The prices in the stores for these is generally in the $20 range, which is why I'm eager to get my purchases online. I've contacted a few places that offer 'discreet shipping', which will hopefully help me avoid the agonizing 55% tobacco duty + insane brokerage fees.

Thanks to all the suggestions so far!

I bought, NO WAIT, I mean I heard you can buy boxes of Quintero Brevas from a supplier in Canada for cheaper than I can get them anywhere NO HOLD ON for cheaper than YOU can get them anywhere else :D

Quintero's are machine made Cuban cigars that are extremely affordable and taste great ;)

There is a consern about shipping things like tobacco into Canada. Unless your sending "candles" or "candy" or something like that they have to pay a large import tax.

How would they know what a private individual was shipping? I could see if the box was plastered with a vendor's name and address, but....? Does Canadian customs open all boxes from the US in hopes of finding contraband? :sign:

I second the Newbie Sampler idea. You'll likely get a wide selection of domestics and...
others (ahem!)

Ignore the fact that I'm next up on the thread as influencing my advice. Oh, and I don't think that I'm going to here from bigsmoke, unless he's just waaaaaayyyyy slow on responding to the thread. :(
