Hi everyone. Let me start by saying I've just recently started to get into smoking and since I was going to invest my time and money into the hobby I wanted to make sure Im doing it the right way. That being said 2 months ago I purchased my first desk top humidor, http://www.neptunecigar.com/pr/30cigar_florence_humidor.aspx
I followed the instructions diligently to season it but I've run into some problems and was hoping the knowledgeable members out there could give me some advice.
Im having difficulty keeping a steady RH % above 60. At first I seasoned it once and used the analog hygrometer and floral humidifier that came with it. I found the hygrometer hard to calibrate and after doing some researching online I realized that they are often not worth the hassle and ordered a digital hygrometer. After a few weeks it seemed that I did something wrong or I had a defective humidor so I contacted Neptune Cigar and they actually sent me a free glass-top one.
After reading the pinned link on this forum about seasoning a humidor Im beginning to think I did not wait long enough to let it season possibly.
Here are some of my questions/concerns
-If in fact I did not wait long enough for proper seasoning, is it possible to season it again and wait the proper time? Or will that damage to humidor beyond repair?
-The humidifiers that came with both humidors seem pretty pathetic and I was going to invest in another/better option. Either the beads or the crystals. I saw that there are bead "packs" by Boveda that actually increase/decrease the RH depending on what is needed to maintain optimal RH levels. What are the opinions out there about these products?

I appreciate any feedback. I realize on these forums sometimes it gets annoying answering questions from Noob after Noob but I hope to gain the knowledge and experience some of you have to oneday help more and more people in my situation enjoy the art of cigars

Welcome to CP. Fill out an intro when you have a chance!

You can absolutely re-season your humidor. I'm assuming the wood is in good condition. Go ahead and re-season it using the guide here. Also, get some beads as they will help to stabilize the environment. The Puck is a good humidifier. The analog hygrometer that comes with most humidors is junk. Invest in a nice digital one for $20.

Hope this helps...

Neptune Cigar and they actually sent me a free glass-top one.

Sometimes those tend to leak RH out from the glass section, do the "whoosh" test. Open the lid fully and drop it closed, does it make that sound or does it just slam shut rattling the glass? Any good humidor will soften the lid closing from the air trying to rush out.

You didn't mention calibrating the digital hygro. Since you said you tried to calibrate the analog ones, I'm guessing you did with the digital, but just want to double check. If it's not calibrated, you'll really have no idea if everything else you're doing is working or not.

Thanks for the responses so far guys. I'll re-season it and see how that goes over the next several days. I do want to get some beads but Rod I havent found "The Puck" for sale online anywhere....any suggestions. Also once I get some beads to I have to keep the cheap foam humidifier in or can I trash that?
I actually dont really like the glass-top one they sent me. Its not real glass its plexiglass and to be honest is a bit too much for me right now. I sticking with the Florence for now.
tom I did calibrate the digital but Im thinking since Im going to re-season the humidor I might as well start from scratch for the hygrometer as well. Is there a link on this forum for calibration of a digital?
