I hope this doesnt come across as a dumb question, but Ive come across many different methods during my research, and Id appreciate anyones comments or experiences about this....

Yesterday I received a new Humidor AND a new box of Cigars. It took a week to get here.

Generally I get one or the other at a time, but never have I had both ordered at the same time before.

My question is... if you receive a new Humidor, should you just throw in the new cigars and season both together? Or will that create an unstable humidity level in the humidor?

I generally season my humidors for 2-3 weeks before I put anything inside, but if both come "dry" then is it ok to do so, or should I really wait until the Humidor is healthy and then throw in the new box and let that level out first?

it would probably be best to do it seperately due to the fact that you usually season at a higher humidity than you would keep the cigars.

try throwing the box in a tupperware big enough to hold it with the correct humidity you want to keep them at and season your humidor with the regular process.

this way everything stays safe

Definitely better to do it separately. I would not season the humidor with the cigars in it. When seasoning the humidity is higher than 70% because the cedar is aborbing moisture, you don't want to over humidfiy the cigars.

Thank you so much guys, thats exactly what I was looking for!

One thing to keep in mind, an empty humidor is much more susceptible to humidity swings. If the new one is say, only 1/3 full and you open it, the humidity will potentially drop a whole lot more than if it were 3/4 full. I'd also recommend buying some beads like the ones I showed you when you were over at my place last. They work WAY better than the drymistat crystals and foam humidifiers.

You shouldn't have to "season" cigars in the same sense that you do a humidor.

They may be a little dry or wet depending on the weather when they are shipped, but they should be in the ball park.

The wood in a humidor (at least the spanish cedar) should have been kiln dried before the humidor was made, so it needs to absorb alot of moisture before it will be able to hold the humidity.

Sidenote, get a coolerdor so that you won't have to worry about getting a new humidor every time you buy a box.

Why did no one mention that we could help store those puppies while waiting for the humidor to season :whistling:

I got my first humidor a few weeks ago. I seasoned it by wiping with distilled water. That only took a few days and it is now anywhere from 70-75%. While I was doing that I kept them in a plastic container with a small humidifier. Just as others have said the humidity gets pretty high when seasoning so I wouldn't keep them in there until it is finished. On a related note if you put them in too soon or don't season well enough it can pull the moisture out of the cigars. Good luck.
