I haven't been into special beers, give me a Newcastle or Tecate with Clamato and I am a happy man, but I want to start trying different beers.

Here are a couple I will get my hands this week.
-St. Bernardus Christmas Ale
-Samuel Smith Winter Welcome Ale

kiwifruit has also been kind enough to get me St. Bernardus Abt 12 ...

... how do I store these? Do I put them in the fridge?

Thanks
Mike

Mike,

Definitely keep them in a cool place if not in the fridge. Here is some good info to get you started. LINKY

OK so I hit Trader Joes ... not much selection, but I picked up a Chimay Grande Reserve and Trader Joe Vintage 2006 ($4.99).

Well opened the TJ V2006 and man was that good ... a bit bitter, but man smooth, robust, and chocolaty.
I really enjoyed it.

Man there are so many great beers out there. One thing I like to do is pick a brewery and drink through their beers. That way you can figure out what style you like, what you don't like, etc. Once you do that maybe get on a style kick and get a bunch of different quads or stouts, whatever you choose and drink through those.

This time of year is harvest time for hops so you will see a bunch of harvest or fresh hop beers. Winter warmers are also out now and they tend to be high in alcohol and on the hoppy side, so try whats seasonal.

Stone is just south of you, start with them and go from there. You won't be disappointed.

Well said brother Jonas...
I'll second the Stone vote! IMO, you really can't wrong... Amazing beers!!!

So I had a couple of Stone's Brews this weekend .... Stone Arrogant Bastard Ale and Stone Smoked Porter.

I really enjoyed the Smoked Porter really rich and thick but the Arrogant Bastard was a bit too bitter, after taste wasn't bad but the initial taste was bitter.

Gonna try Stone Vertical Epic and the St. Bernardus Christmas Ale next.

Ok so I found me a Maudite 750 ... gonna pop it open tonight, any recommendations on the cigar to go with this? ???

Ok please bare with me since this is my first beer review and also first cigar pairing..

So I decided to open my bottle of Maudite ... upon opening I could smell the delicious aroma of raisins, spices, sweetness and alcohol. It smelled awesome! I looked at the cork which had a date of 01-07. I poured the beer into a maudite glass. The appearance is that of ice tea or a dark honey color with a bit cloudiness and a head of a half an inch that faded.

When I took my first sip, it had a sweet citrus flavor with some spices ... I put my glass down and thought, an Italian Cold Cut Sandwich would go great with this ... so I prepared a sandwich with Provilone, Salami, and Mortatella and some mustard. Man the cheese and meats and beer went perfect. It was a great compliment.

As I washed down my last bite, I poured the rest of the beer in the glass, proceeded to my humi and pulled out a Tat J21. I was hoping the toffee, cinnamon and sweetness of the cigar would fit with the beer.

Well the fit was nice but not great ... at first the beer overpowered the Tat with its fruity spicey alcohol taste but once I finish the half of the Tat, the cigars flavor became more pronounced ... the Tat's sweetness stood out,I looked down and realized I was done with my beer, so that could be the reason the cigar started to stand out.

Overall the beer was great, good till the last drop. The Tat was awesome but together they were just ok.

Next time a spicey and peppery cigar might work better ... maybe a Partagas Black Label.

The one around my waist? Or the Belgium beer?

Jk Fat Tire meeze likes.

Since you are in SoCal, I would HIGHLY (...yes I'm yelling) rec. you try any of the Russian River beers you can get your hands on especially Pliney (it's a hop bomb) Belgians, and the barrel aged selections...they are all good IMO-Linky to full line o' beers
