OK, so heres my problem. I got this new humi that holds 50 sticks because I totally ran out of room in my 20-stick cheapy humi box. Ever since I switched my hydro is reading t 75%+ and it seems like I cant do anything about it... I took my time and seasoned the new box properly, wiped it down, made sure the wood wasn't "thirsty"... I'm not sure what the prob is.
Now take in mind... I have tried to leave the lid open for a while and the hydro gets down to a comfortable 63 and then I close it back up and it climbs right back up... I wonder if the humidifier thingy is giving out too much moisture... Heres what I got... exactly... any help would be great.

(there is no noticable affect on the cigars yet but I want to address this before anything happens)

Have you done a test on your hygrometer? Any chance you over did it on the wiping down? Sounds to me that your humi is a little wet. Maybe take some dry Spanish cedar and leave it in for a few days.

edit: to change hydro to hygro. sorry

Are you using a digital hygro or the analog in the picture? Have you done the salt test? If you are using the analog, they stink. They can be 10% or more off and they seem to take a long time to settle. If you are using digital, run the salt test and see if your hygro is off. I would start there before doing anything drastic.

Ya... Its the analog one. I was hoping that was it. truthfully I had a feeling that it was just a cheap sensor and the reading was just way off. Thanks.

As a new cigar guy myself, I can not only relate but ECHO what these guys are saying. The analog hydrometers are really, really crap. The only thing they are good for is for decoration!

Get a digital hydrometer and never look back. The one I got here was only $15.00: http://www.cubancrafters.com/products.php/item_id/304

If I stuck with the analog only, I would still be pulling my hair out. I had it calibrated right after the salt test, but it still reads 10-15% in error. The digital one doesn't need calibration, and it even shows you the temperature which is another measurement you should be concerned with.

I wonder if the humidifier thingy is giving out too much moisture.......

Getting a digital hygrometer and salt testing it will give you assurances that you are getting an accurate humidity reading. As for your humidifier...... exactly what are you putting in it? The humidifier in itself does not regulate anything.

The directions for the humidifier state that I should soak it in distilled water for three minutes.... so, thats what i do...

There is a wealth of information on the subject. Do a search and you'll get over 50 threads were this is discussed in detail.

Brother Kenny nailed for you though if you haven't tested your thingamabob, you are just shooting blanks. Do yourself a favor read up on it, get a digital( and no I don't mean a finger wave  ) and some 65% beads.

I forgot to mention this is a great thread on the subject and some really great information, to bad the person imploded. The first six or seven pages are on the subject, after that it becomes a donny brook. Rod should really pin that one:

MC, Bill Clinton was a classic I got to chat with him the day Rod banned him and he was like a wild man. I wonder how his humidor is????

Which one?

Classic thread that is funnier everytime I read it.

You have to have an accurate hygrometer to measure with so take care of that regardless of anything else but I suspect your problem is prob the humidifier. If you are just soaking it in distilled water there is nothing regulating it. I'm surprise you don't get a higher reading than what you are. Either use some of the 50/50 solutions you can buy or get yourself some PG and mix up a 50/50 solution. That will most likely take care of your problem.

Most people here recommend using Silica beads as they are practically idiot proof. You can search Viper beads or Silica beads and get all the info you need on those or just soak your humidifier in a 50/50 solution.

It's been said but I'll say it again.

Get a digital hygro. So much easier to deal with than an analog. One of my humidors has both a digital and the analog it came with, some how when the analog arrived and when tested it was spot on and it continues to keep perfect measurements. I keep it in there because it looks good, when I check my humidity I just need to glance at the digital.

And pick up some beads. They aren't the cheapest humidifying element around but they are the best. I use to have big problems keeping the humidity were it needed to be, had to check the humidor at least once a day and make changes, god forbid I went out of town for a week. Now I don't have to deal with all of that (I still check the humidor about once a day, but thats just because I like to see what I have :D )

Easiest way to go, buy the adjustable hygrometer and Boveda testing kit. Got it off ebay for 17 bucks, can be found else where for 25. Simple and accurate...
