Hello,

I just turned 18 a few months ago and have been starting to build up a small collected of cigars. I was never a big smoker but my step dad is really big into cigars but is not super knowledgeable on the subject of lower priced humidors. But he has gotten me hooked, I'm smoking about 2-4 cigars a week at the moment. For the first month i was smoking what these awful dutchmasters wrap cigars, but after smoking a few pricier high end cigars i am pretty sure im never going to smoke another wrap cigar ever again. I had a few questions but mainly about which humidor to purchase. At the moment i only have about 5 MonteCristo No. 1's and about 10 Arturo Fuente Short Stories which i have really enjoyed sofar. The cubans he had, and im not sure what i could buy around here that is similar. But as for the humidor my budget s is around 100-150 dollars, im looking for something nothing huge, but if possible something really rustic or antique looking. My step dad has this amazing humidor made from a very old treasure chest but it was about 2 grand so thats not really an option.

Any help on the subject would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Rick

This forum has a sellers area and you can probaly find some good deals. Alot of these guys here are incredibly knowledgeable so stick around and in a few months you'll might have enough to create your own. Remember, like I was told months ago the search tool is our friend on the forums. And dont forget to go to the newbie area and introduce yourself.

Here are a few to help you with your hunt. The links to the website below are great. They stand behind their product and have quality humidors. I would also do a little exploring for yourself, but the ones I listed below should fit in to what you are looking for. Be sure to introduce yourself in the introduction part of the web site as well. Enjoy the new hobby, and welcome to CP.

I was just about to link you to CH.com, but Nick beat me. Congrats on the newfound hobby Friz, make sur eyou get a big humidor because you'll fill it up before you know it.

Also, since you joined, take a minute or two to introduce yourself in the Introduction Forum, so we can get to know you. Thanks for joining, and welcome to Cigar Pass!

Thanks for all the responses I'm going to introduce Myself more formally when I get off work. But I checked out the sites, great stuff but I think I wanna purchase one from my local tobacconist. Any thing to look out for?

Just look for a few basic things like a good seal, good craftsmanship, nothing with a ton of glue oozing out that you can see, etc. Also, and this is just my personal input, I would stray away from humidors with windows. Although they're super nice to look at, some people have had problems with their seals. I prefer to just have the solid wooden one. Good luck!

Correct if I am wrong BOTL, but your lid should never slap shut. It should sould kind of like a woosh sound to show a good seal when let go from 2-3 inches.

I just bought one from my local smoke shop the guy showed me all the different ones he had, and pointed out the one that was the best value. Its a small desktop model which is what i wanted. But i am now in the process of seasoning it, but im not sure where to keep all the cigars i bought today until its done being seasoned? I put them in a big zip lock will they be okay for like a day or so until its ready? Also it didnt come with a Hydrometer but he said i really didn't need one?

Any ideas?

If you have a humidification device (Heartfelt Beads are great) you could put your cigars in a ziplock or tupperware container with the humidification device until you get the humidor seasoned. You can buy a digital hygrometer at Wal-Mart for $7 and as long as you do the salt test to see how far off it is, it'll work great.

Thanks so much for the quick and knowledgable response. I put them in the ziplock like you said, and ill pick up a hyderometer. The humidor came with a basic humidation device it just sucks in distilled water is that sufficent?

From being on these forums and reading, to me the guy is an idiot and just wants the money. Hydrometers are your friend they measure how much humidity is inside your box. Your cigars need to be at a certain range (65-73) in order for their exsistance. To high you get beetles too low they dry out and are trash.

Any ideas?

Ok I am not an expert but from being on these forums first I would done was say "lemme think about and shop around". . I dont think any decent cigar shop would do that let alone say that. From reading what you just posted I would be afraid of his smokes. If he gives bad advice who knows about what condition they are in. The best advice I can give you is read in these forums and if you cant find it here, google is your next best friend. I read some internet advice before I bought my first, I would buy singles then smoke them that day. I hope I did a good job in answering and if I missed anything I am sure the BOTL will fill in the rest.

The freezer is an excellent idea it will kill beetles and keep them fresh while the humidor seasons.

Everything else I agree with, except this. Frizzy, DO NOT throw your smokes in the freezer yet. Just keep em in the ziplock. If they suddenly grow holes and dust starts coming out of the foot, then maybe think about this option.

For now, keep them in the zippylock and DO NOT FREEZE THEM.

Man i thought this guy that owned the shop was a great guy, pretty well respected in the community, and he reccomended his cheapest humidor that he had so im sure its not just based on the money, but in any event im gonna pick up a hydrometer tomorro, and was planning on buying some more smokes from him but im not sure what to do. He is the only cigar shop for about 100 miles.

Next time you go into his shop try and see what the RH is in the humidor. There might not be anything wrong with his cigars. I would just be weary of his desktop humidor advice

. I've never heard anyone say you don't need a hygrometer for your humdior. Just one man's opinion. Also, I believe if you stick around here long enough you will outgrow that humdior fairly soon so the humidification device that came with it will prob do you for now. I would agree with b.dawgson on humidification beads from heartfelt. Very low maintenance and do an outstanding job! If you really want another place to purchase cigars other than your local B&M you could try the newbie sampler thread on here as well as the many outstanding retailers on this forum. Hope this helps!
