Need a recommendation on beads

Hey every1,
Im looking to make a beads purchase, but im having problems deciding what type. I heard most cigars are kept at 65%, and 70% is used to speed up the aging process? Is that true?

Also, i have two humidors. A small 15ct black one that i plan on using for long-term aging, and a large 100ct for my collection. I was wondering if you can buy a disc full of beads, to replace the crappy plastic sponge one that comes with the humi.

For the desktop humi, what would be more efficient in keeping the humidity? The large aluminum brick, or a few of the tubes placed throughout the humi?

Thanks in advance for your help!

aging is determined by oxygen and not humidity. get the beads best suited for your smokes - ie 70% for N/Cs

I tend to disagree...holding them at a higher humidity and a higher temperature will infact age them faster, however, you do run the risk of mold and beatles(ask me how i know... ) How much faster is questionable, but i will tell you this....ive NEVER had a cigar that smoked worth a darn at 70%...65% is where its at!! Theres a reason why heartfelt sells mostly 65% beads. 70/70 is a number that was adopted because its easy to remember...where as ideal conditions are more like under 70 and around 65% RH.

Just my 2 pesos.... :whistling:

my humi's are 65% steady. i ordered some beads from VIPER i ordered a half pound , plus a meduim tube of 65% beads.

I havent tried Vipers (Davids) beads, but many people can vouch. I went this way because of lower maintanence.

Zach: Your problem is not beads ... it's the fact that your humidors are too small. You should be buying boxes of cigars for "long term aging" ... and then storing them in a large coolerdor or cabinet humidor.

The reasons for this are threefold:

1. The price per cigar is generally much less in box quantities
2. Full boxes actually become humidification sources themselves
3. You won't be kicking yourself because you found out that those three year old cigars are now the best thing you ever smoked ... and instead of having only a couple, you have almost a full box.

Well, looks like i will end up buying some 65% beads for my 100ct humidor and leaving the small one empty until i find a use for it. The question is this, should i just buy that aluminum brick, or buy a few tubes and scatter them throughout the humidor?

The brick is probably a bit much for a 100ct humi. It will take up a bunch of space and is not really needed for that size humi anyway. You're better off just buying the beads and putting them in either a small mesh bag or a small tupperware container.

Of course when you finally realize that you're addiction is going to outgrow you're current storage situation you'll buy a cooler beacuse it's cheap and can hold way more cigars than a desktop humi. Then the brick may be a better option. :D

You may be thinking "I'll never have that many cigars" right now but trust me...you will :D

Agreed it is a bit much for the 100ct humi, but it wont take up any space as i can affix it to the top of the humi's lid, like my current sponge brick is. I figure its always to go a little bigger than your current plans, and believe me, the ONLY thing holding me back from building a coolidor and having 800 sticks is the fact that my current income doesnt allow for it. :p

I was gifted a desktop humidor so I don't know the "official" size, but I have had more than 100 robusto size cigars in it at a time. I use one tube and the RH stays steady at 65%. You wouldn't need a few tubes for your box, just one of the 2 ounce size will do the job and you'll save money to boot.

Good luck.
