I saw this picture in the most recent issue of AutoWeek while having my morning constitutional today.

It's a driver named Felice Bonetto driving a Maserati on the Nordschliefe in 1952. The picture was part of an article on racecar drivers who loved tobacco. Unfortunately, I can't find the story on the AW site otherwise I'd provide a link since I found it to be a very enjoyable read. Perhaps after the issue is no longer current it will be available in their archives. I'll check again in a while.

Now instead of a pipe in their mouth they have a bug in their ear telling them "turn left", "turn left", "car behind you", "turn left", "turn left", "car in front of you", "turn left", "turn left".

....some of the NASCAR guys need constant reminders; "LEFT, dammit...!!!...."......

Nice picture. When you look back at some old photos and movies it's amazing how the view on tobacco has changed. We're about 180* from where it was even 60 years ago.

Yeah, I saw some footage recently of Arnold Palmer at the Masters from the 60's. Long distance camera shot from behind the green to see Arnie sizing up his approach shot, and smoking like a train.

That's a cool pic. What's even cooler is the fact it's on the Nürburgring Nordschleife. 14 miles, almost 100 corners, multiple fatalities each year, and this guy is smoking a pipe. BTW, he was disqualified for that race .

And he died a bit more than a year later, maybe trying to light his pipe while in the lead?

I would love to see there reaction if the pit crew chef said "Turn right" the driver would be lost.
