The specimen:
Nat Sherman Metropolitan - Bankers (Maduro)
Specs:
5 x 66/70
Origin - Dominican Republic
Wrapper - Connecticut
Binder - DR
Filler - DR
Got a box of ten of these babies from JR's. Came with a free Nat Sherman "Commemorative" ashtray. The ashtray is gorgeous and huge. Will have to post a pic of it sometime. But pics on JR's site really don't do it justice or capture how truly large the ashtray is.
Anyway, these sticks...they are equally as huge. 66 ring gauge oughta tell you something. But I'm a big fan of the Maduros in the Metropolitan line (especially the Explorer and the University), so I figured I'd give this behemoth a try. 66 is the ring gauge as listed by JR's. Nat Sherman themselves set the gauge at 70. I think it's probably closer to 70. Bottom line, they are massive.
Pour four fingers of Laphroaig 15 year, cut the cap with a pair of Davidoff scissors. Then toast the baby with a Vector tabletop, light up and I'm good to go.
Stick burned flawlessly the whole way through, beginning to end. Held an ash very nicely as well, but with a new pup running around, trying to gobble up everything, I didn't risk letting the ash go to far and fall, so dropped it off in the ashtray sooner than it could have gone. Flavor wise....a very nice medium bodied smoke, with very defined tastes of tobacco, leather, cocoa and a very tiny bit of pepper. Very nice tastes. Smoked sooooooooo damn cool too. With an approx gauge of 70, that's to be expected. But it smoked cool as the other side of a pillow, and poured out bounties of smoke. Very nice. A very Nat Sherman maduro type of cigar, so if you like anything in their maddie line, you'll like this one. Kind of similar, I suppose, to a Leon Jimenes Maduro or even something in the La Aurora Preferido (i.e., the "reds" - maduro) line, though I don't know if it's quite as refined or as complex as those
A great stick if you're into this size. It's definitely not for everyone, but it's well worth a try.
