Thanks to Ginseng, and on his recommendation, I made my first very first Padron the 1964 Anniversary Exclusivo Maduro. I checked out the Padron website and it looks like with the Exclusivo fits the description of what I had. 50 on the gauge and 5.5"-6" in length, the wrapper was nice and dark, beautiful looking cigar with a good feel. I guess it could have been a dark natural. I can't really tell the difference that well.
I was a little hesitant to smoke something tonight that a lot of you guys think highly of becuase I wasn't sure if I would be able to pick out any of the subtleties inherant in what I understood to be such a fine smoke. It's been a long week already, and today I got home from work during a huge thunderstorm, afterwards I had to repair a gate in the sticky disgusting heat for 2 hours, then I went to play volleyball with some friends for another 2. I got home and wanted to relax and I just kept thinking about the Padron in my humi.
Well I grabbed a towel, wiped off a chair on my deck, poured a glass of Tawny 10 year port, and lit this bad boy up.
I was impressed with how it lit until I realized I didn't fully light it, but the first draw after the light was nice and mild. I gave the stick a minute to correct the light and it did. Very impressive to me. The draw wasn't too tight, and I'm hesitant to say tight enough to be perfect, but man, it really was. I was really enjoying hanging out there in the sticky mist just puffing away on this thing. I had a hard time picking out any flavors, but there was just this... underlying tiny bit of sweetness that I couldn't quite put my finger on. It plagued me for the entirety of the cigar, but I really enjoyed every puff when that flavor just popped in there. It was almost non existant for the first 1/4 of the stick. After about that 1/4th, it started getting a little stronger. I don't really know what to call it, almost but not really a fruity sweetness, maybe cherry, but there was something cool there. I also picked up a little kick of spice at a few points through the thing. To be perfectly honest I can't remember at what point I realized I was getting it, but it was there.
Anyway, at that critical 1/4 way through the cigar, I noted that the ash almost looked a completely smooth white. I went to go ash it in order to prevent what I call "premature ashulation" (which I'm told happens to every guy), and the stuff didn't budge. Shrugging it off I kept smoking. I was debating on going for an ash record with you guys, but realized it would probably take away from the smoking experience tonight, so I refrained. However I didn't ash it until 1/2 way through the stick, and I had to hit it kind of hard to get that stuff off. Pretty impressive to me.
I kept smoking until I had maybe 1.5" left and decided I had been bitten by enough mosquitos and put it down to come tell you guys what I thought.
Hopefully I'm pretty close in my thoughts on this stick. Definately A+ in my book and highly recommended by me, a newbie
Thanks again to the BOTL that gave me the opportunity to try this out.
