My Onyx cigars smell horrid

I have smoked 3 or 4 Onyx cigars before and I always thought they were ok. So, the other day I bought a few more. I was pulling some cigars out of my humidor and smelling them the other day and I pulled out my Onyx and they smelled horrid. I mean really bad. Not in a damn that's a strong cigar way either. I mean these things smell like some horrid bitter nasty shit. I cant explain in nice terms how bad these smell. Anyway, I took them out of my humi and put them in their own little tupperware box. I just smelled them again, just opening the tupperware was enough to turn my stomach. What is the cause of this? This is not a normal cigar smell. I bought these at a place that carries a small selection of cigars in a little humidor, so I cant imagine that they have a very good turnover. I did notice that a few of their cigars had some mold on them, but I was careful to pick those that were mold free. Has anyone else had a problem like this?

Fire it up and let us know how it tastes! :p

And seeing mold in a store's walkin humidor is the quickest way to make me NOT buy anything from that B&M.

Did you tell the owner/manager?

There was only mold on a few of the stickes and they were on the bottom right next to the humidifier. I didnt tell anyone at the store because this isnt really a cigar store. They mainly sell coffee, tea, kitchen crap and hops/barley etc. I dont think they would have paid any attention to me anyway. I wouldnt have bought anything, but I have bought some Fuentes from them before and their prices are great. For example, a Fuente that costs 7.75 at every other store in town is only 6.00 here. Others that are 4.75-5.00 are 3.50 or so. This is the first time I have seen mold and it was only on one box. Since the Fuentes are on the upper shelves and farther away from the humidifier I think they are ok.
I pulled out an Onyx that I bought from another store and it had a very very faint hint of the smell the others had. The ones that smelled bad had about 100 times the smell of this one. They were also wrapped in cellophane and the head came to a point. I am not exactly sure which vitola this is, but all the other Onyx I have seen didnt have any cellophane on them. Why is it that the exact same cigar will have cellophane on it at one store and not at the other store?

That is strange, I can't picture someone opening boxes just to remove the cello. I would have still pointed the mold out to them since mold spores spread fast and don't just float in one area.

Here is a link to Altadis's contact site, I'd ask them both about the horrible smell and the cello.

Over humidifying seems to be the culprit. As the excess humidity is released from your cigars into your humi, gases are also released from the cigar. This is prevelant in very strong cigars as in Maduros also. I wouldn't worry, just don't smoke any until they stop being gassey.

Wow if the price is right I guess but I would never buy a smoke if I see others are moldy, good info to know emodx. I didn’t know cigars had well cigar farts. My new excuse for the women right there.

Customer service was great, they shipped 5 cigars to me after I sent them an email politely explaining my problem. They didnt give me an answer, but over humidification was probably the culprit, as suggested earlier.

Yeah...over humidifaction. Just remember that tobacco is a leafy plant material...even though it's 'cured' it will still want to decay if it's not kept in optimum conditions. That acrid smell is probably fermentaion going on. It'll probably end up being one of the sweetest smokes you have in the next year or so...or it'll taste like compost.

I know this thread is a little old, but I had the same problem a few months ago. I'm not sure if it was overhumidification, but I think that may be it. I noticed a dung-like smell from an onyx I had in my humidor, and it had a strange taste compared to the onyx reserves I smoked a month or two before that (same box). Also, about a month ago I was drunk and couldn't find my cutter, so I tried using a kitchen knife on an onyx reserve. It didn't work, but when I cut the cigar, the blade was very sticky.
