My month of Cubans only

Taking up a challenge from a few people, I decided to smoke nothing but Cubans for a month. I generally smoke only twice at work (at poker nights), but when I do, I smoke an awful lot of cigars.

I'll be posting the cigars I smoke, along with some observations, as I smoke 'em in this thread.

Vegas Robaina Don Alejandro 2003 This cigar smelled absolutely wonderful -- hints of cinnamon and spice... yum! Unfortunately the taste didn't live up to the aroma. The cigar was essentially bitter, with undertones of harshness. There certainly were some interesting flavors flitting here and there, but they were clobbered over the head by the bitter flavor. I suspect in a few years, this will be a better smoke.

San Cristobal El Principe 2002 This little cigar was more like it -- peppery but not harsh, and with a touch of sweetness that left a nice aftertaste. This is a stick that makes you wish it was longer; thankfully I have some larger sized San Cristobals to go through. It did get a little nappy on the finish, but it wasn't too bad. Nubbed it.

Hoyo de Monterrey Edicion Limitada 2003 Piramides From first draw to nubbing finish, this was definitely the best cigar so far. I absolutely love these gems; deep, rich, wonderful flavors with a nice balance of sweetness and hints of spice.... yum. The taste left in your mouth after each exhale is similar to the wonderful tingling sweetness after quaffing fine cognac. Nubbed it.

Okay folks, here I have to admit, I was losing in poker (down $80), and I was weak. I fell back on my old standbys. I had some Monte "C" ELs, Partagas Shorts and Lusitanias, but I failed. I turned to my trusty standby, an Opus X Reserva d'Chateau from 2003. It was lovely, the high-note spice contrasted mixed with fruity sweetness sent me to heaven. It contrasted well with the previous three cigars.

I actually started winning at poker too -- no connection I'm sure. Probably it was the slightly intoxicated newcomer to the table who helped that along. :) I also was gifted a 2002 Añejo No.46 that I smoked to the nub, a wonderful mixture of deep rich cocoa, spice, and a mellow sweetness that was a great nightcap.

So my first night of "Cubans only" was a failure of sorts. I fell back on a couple of non-Cuban cigars -- I'll try to do better next time. Out of all of them, the 2003 VR Don Alejandro was clearly the worst of the bunch.

Until next time...

Nice review Moki, and I feel the same as you about the HdM EL's. They are by far my favorite so far, nubbed every one that I have had.

Damn you have some serious poker nights :D

Most people after a night of that many cigars would be curled up in the corner in a fetal position crying :sign:

Nice review though, I guess I am going to have to pull one of those HDMEL's out of the humidor and try it.

Great review as always Mokester and nice set of cigars too. :)

I'm not surprised with the VR DA's, they're much better with some age.

I have some April, 2000 which are smoking so well, I only have two left :0

Your SC review is right on ;) With those too, my 2000's & 2001's smoked better than the 02's

Tonight is poker night again; I've picked out the following cigars to bring with me to choose from:

San Cristobal El Morro DEC 2001
Romeo y Julieta Churchill in Tube 1985
Montecristo "C" EL 2003
Davidoff Haut Brion 1988
Cohiba Siglo V (30th Anni. jar) 1996

Not sure which ones I'll end up smoking, but the Davidoff will have to burn first. Wish me luck! :)

I just don't want to hear any complaining about you losing $80 in poker while you were smoking $200+ in cigars :0

Good Luck

Well, at least the cigars I'd be enjoying -- losing at poker I wouldn't. :)

Really slumming it huh?

I have some RyJ Churchill's (not tubos) and I've been very unimpressed. I think mine are only '98s though. I can't wait to hear about the Davidoff. I really want to try a Davidoff and a Monty C. I suspect the C will happen first. :p

I think you should have a month on non-premiums, no Fuente, Padron, Greycliff, Cubans, etc. And just finish off some of those dog rockets you asked for before the weather gets cold again

Good luck Moki and this time focus a little more on the cigars your smokin bro and not so much on the game........but have fun. :)

Quite a selection you have there. LOL!

Have fun with the Haut Brion, bastid! :p

Looking forward to the reviews, especially the Monte EL.

Davidoff Haut Brion 1988 -- Started off with this little guy -- amazing amount of flavor for a 16 year old cigar, the initial light was even strong to the point of being slightly bitter, but quickly assumed typical wonderful Davidoff profile. It's difficult to describe, but you know it when you smoke a nice aged Davidoff; it's a very unique taste. One of the few cigars with this much flavor that I can enjoy exhaling the smoke through my nose; very refined. I nubbed this little guy by sticking a toothpick in it, so it looked like a cocktail weenie. A great way to start off the night.

Romeo y Julieta Churchill in Tube 1985 -- This cigar has been sitting in a cedar-lined tube for about 20 years, so it's probably not much of a surprise that it's taken on cedar hints. It also had a wonderful molasses sweet undertone that left a wonderful after-taste -- and it also had a decent amount of spice on a full draw. Turned a bit more earthy towards the finish, but was still well mannered.

Cohiba Siglo V (30th Anni. jar) 1996 -- This cigar came in a special jar celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Cohiba brand. Right off of the bat I was rewarded with that characteristic Cohiba sweetness, with slightly grassy notes initially. Further into the cigar, it took on a deeper, leathery flavor while still retaining hints of spice and sweetness. Nubbed it.

San Cristobal El Morro DEC 2001 -- The last cigar of the night, this was also unfortunately a disappointment -- not because of flavor (I love the profile of the San Cristobal line), but construction. I was getting a tight draw on the cigar; I tried rolling it a bit to loosen it up. I tried cutting it higher up with the cutter. Then I felt the cigar, and it was rather soft up towards the foot, but very firm further down. If I had a cigar poker, I would have tried that too, because I was rather bummed that one of my favorites was not cooperating. I finally gave up and tossed it, with only an inch or two burned -- I was getting tired of sucking so hard on it.

I considered lighting up a Cohiba Double Corona EL, but I decided I didn't want to overdo it on cigars tonight. Except for the unfortunate construction issues with the San Cristobal, it was a very enjoyable night of cigars. I enjoyed the Haut Brion quite a bit, but in a very different way than the 1996 Siglo V. The 1985 Romeo y Julieta was good too, just not as good as the other two.

Oh -- the poker was a roller coaster -- down, then up, then down, then finally finishing up a meager $25. Still, it was a fun night.

:0 LMAO....That's funny taken out of context :p

Glad you had another good night
Another good night of suckin' on it, right? heh

BTW, yes, CC, that El Morro was one you put into Ashley's box pass. :)

I've had a few others from that El Morro box act the same way which pi$$es me off to no end  Others have been fine though. My first box of El Morro's was better than this one.

Sorry your experience with the SC's was a bad one :(

The taste of San Cristobals is great -- the construction, as seems to be the case with many Cuban "brands" is, well, variable. :/
