Taking up a challenge from a few people, I decided to smoke nothing but Cubans for a month. I generally smoke only twice at work (at poker nights), but when I do, I smoke an awful lot of cigars.
I'll be posting the cigars I smoke, along with some observations, as I smoke 'em in this thread.
Vegas Robaina Don Alejandro 2003 This cigar smelled absolutely wonderful -- hints of cinnamon and spice... yum! Unfortunately the taste didn't live up to the aroma. The cigar was essentially bitter, with undertones of harshness. There certainly were some interesting flavors flitting here and there, but they were clobbered over the head by the bitter flavor. I suspect in a few years, this will be a better smoke.
San Cristobal El Principe 2002 This little cigar was more like it -- peppery but not harsh, and with a touch of sweetness that left a nice aftertaste. This is a stick that makes you wish it was longer; thankfully I have some larger sized San Cristobals to go through. It did get a little nappy on the finish, but it wasn't too bad. Nubbed it.
Hoyo de Monterrey Edicion Limitada 2003 Piramides From first draw to nubbing finish, this was definitely the best cigar so far. I absolutely love these gems; deep, rich, wonderful flavors with a nice balance of sweetness and hints of spice.... yum. The taste left in your mouth after each exhale is similar to the wonderful tingling sweetness after quaffing fine cognac. Nubbed it.
Okay folks, here I have to admit, I was losing in poker (down $80), and I was weak. I fell back on my old standbys. I had some Monte "C" ELs, Partagas Shorts and Lusitanias, but I failed. I turned to my trusty standby, an Opus X Reserva d'Chateau from 2003. It was lovely, the high-note spice contrasted mixed with fruity sweetness sent me to heaven. It contrasted well with the previous three cigars.
I actually started winning at poker too -- no connection I'm sure. Probably it was the slightly intoxicated newcomer to the table who helped that along. I also was gifted a 2002 Añejo No.46 that I smoked to the nub, a wonderful mixture of deep rich cocoa, spice, and a mellow sweetness that was a great nightcap.
So my first night of "Cubans only" was a failure of sorts. I fell back on a couple of non-Cuban cigars -- I'll try to do better next time. Out of all of them, the 2003 VR Don Alejandro was clearly the worst of the bunch.
Until next time...
