My Humidor warped !

Hello ! I have a question about my warped humidor. I had this desktop 25 to 50 count for 2 months running good at 60 to 75 % adding distilled water once a week. I went on vacation for a week and a heat wave hit NY. Before I left a took my cigars and the box was empty. When I came home my box was warped on 3 corners. Laminated pealed off and wood was warped. Is this because of the heat wave ? Or I didn't add distilled water when I left and it dried out. I really would like to find out before I purchase an upgraded box. I just came back with 25 cigars and want to set up a nice humidor for replacement...

I would be reading more on this forum and try to learn more...

thanks in advance

Hey there, first off you should post an intro in the Introductions forum tell us a bit about yourself. But it's cool to jump right into it :)

What was the surrounding temp of the humidor? Did you have it by a window or in an area that fluctuates in temp difference? I doubt its the water, the spanish cedar in the humidor is made to absorb the water (and you do not have to replace it every week)...

Let us know..

Thanks,
Brian

Oh, and welcome to CP from a fellow NYer.

Yes already posted in intro section....

Surrounding temp is usually 75 to 80 degrees. When I went on vacation room probably got hotter than normal as we had a heat wave. Windows where never opened in a week. Not near a window. I actually keep it in a wooden desk draw. I replace water just about every week because sponges (2) get dried out quickly.

Vinman, im terrible, dont mind me :whistling:

The heat is likely the cause. I have a desktop humidor in a constant 78 degrees, but a few times I have let it slip and my power went out or my wife shut off the ac or something like that and it hit 90's, but I have never heard of it warping.

BTW.. Try using a shot glass of distilled water or pick up some humidification beads (even better).

Pictures?
Depending on the construction, there is a school of thought that suggests something laminated on one side is susceptible to warpage. Non laminated side expands and contracts, while the laminated side sort of doesnt. I've seen it a lot with particle board, and MDF, both of which are used in humidors

bully 1875 gonna research your ideas and try them "I have much to learn"

Madmonk I am going to post pic of box..."have to figure out how first"

I also think it had to do with heat and just wanted to double check before I invested in a bigger box. "Don't want to keep recking them"

Ok figured pic out "quick learner"

Hmm. Prognosis isnt good. I can't tell what is behind the laminate. Get a cooler.

Yes agree just put 25 Cubans from Aruba in there "vacation". Wasn't happy to find box banged up. Looking to purchase bigger box but wanted find out what went wrong. I don't mess up a bigger investment.

This is how I ended up here "to learn...'

No offense, but your desktop humi was a POS to begin with, an would have delaminated no matter what the weather. Use tupperware for now and shop for something a little better. There are a number of trusted vendors who post regularly here. Search for humidor in our Vendor's forum.

Ya say that to all the sailors, ya fickle bastid.

Doc.

Quit wasting money on small humidors. Buy yourself a cooler some BEads from cigarmony.com and call it a day.
Coolers are efficient reasonably priced and can take a beating.

THEN once you out grow it, you can fill it with ice and beer!

So I'm supposed to take the ice and beer out before putting the cigars in? D'oh! That explains why I can't keep the damn things lit,

China is fine, at least for quality. Its Vietnam and Indonesia you gotta watch for. Quality is fine there, excellent woodworkers. The wood used is not often kiln dried. They ship back to the states and the shell wood dries, then cracks - sounds like a firecracker when it happens.
