About 2 weeks ago I was bombed by Nice_Ashh and in it was an ISOM from 1999. We pm'ed each other a few times and thought it would be a good idea for me to do a review on this cigar and throw in a contest to boot. So, I smoked it and took some notes for my review, sent it to Eric to see if he agreed with what I found and he thought it was decent. The contest is.... After reading my review on this cigar, if you can tell what it is you will get a nice little 5'er from Eric and myself. You'll have to bear with me through this because I may be a little vague since I haven't been smoking cigars that long. This contest is open to everyone...1 guess per person and the contest will end one week from this initial post and then I'll go back see if anyone has correctly guessed and announce the winner. Here we go......
Here are the basic dimensions 130 mm (5.1 inches) 40 ring gauge. You already know where the filler, binder, and wrapper come from.
The construction overall was good with the only imperfection being there were a few places on the wrapper that were coming loose. Very firm and a little dry, it could have stood a little more humi time. I clipped the head and took a pre-light draw...very dusty with a hint of cedar and cocoa. I proceeded to toast the foot and light it up.
The initial draw was very pleasant with earthy undertones and a slight hint of coffee and cocoa. For a small cigar, this certainly produced a great deal of smoke, which I really like in a cigar. At about an inch in, it's a very enjoyable medium bodied cigar with a with a leathery taste now and a touch of white pepper. I can still faintly taste hints of coffee and cocoa but they are fading fast.
At a 1/3 of the way,I'm starting to have a problem with the wrapper coming loose from the binder. This doesn't effect the way it's smoking because it's burning very evenly with a nice white/light gray ash. The ash holds steady until about 1 1/2 inches then falls off. It's producing a massive amount of smoke at this point, but I'm having to really be careful because the wrapper is ready to come off completely.
At the half way point the flavors have completely changed. Any trace of coffee and cocoa are completely gone and have been replaced by a leathery and white pepper taste. The longer of a draw I take, the heavier the pepper comes through the cigar, but not too the point where it's overpowering.
Here you can see the wrapper problems I'm having with this cigar. It's still burning evenly though and the taste has gone to where it's completely spicy now. I would say that in the latter half of smoking this cigar, it went from a medium body smoke to a low end full body.
As you can see, the ash is holding on nicely as I finish up. I smoked this cigar down to the last 1/2 inch and it never got bitter. I've never smoked a cigar that's had any age on it (I've been gifted quite a few, but they are still resting) so I don't know if smoking a "young" cigar produces that bitter taste in the last inch and a half or so.
Well, that's it folks. I hope that I wasn't too vague for you to make your guesses, just remember this is my first review and my palate isn't quite as refined as some of yours are. Good luck to all of you and thanks Eric for this wonderful cigar!
edited to say sorry about the pics, I just noticed how badly they suck!
