Several friends and I get together on weekends around a fire. Some smoke cigars, some a pipe and some a cigarette. My friend Mike is the pipe smoker. Last night he talked me into trying a pipe. He brought out this beautiful hand carved ball & claw pipe. The B&C part looked like ivory and went up to a beautiful stem. He said it was made of Meerschaum. The tobacco was called Northern Sea I believe. The taste to the upper part of my mouth was a very sweet sensation but the under side of my tongue came alive with a wonderful spiciness. It started at the tip of my tongue and migrated to the whole lower part of my mouth. really quite complex. Then when I got that bite going on, I chased it with a splash of 16 year Lagavulin Scotch. This really brought the flavor full circle. the 2 are a match made in heaven. Lagavulin, for those of you that haven't tried it, is one of the finest Scotches available in my opinion. Very smokey/peaty flavor. All in all a wonderful experience. I may have to find myself a nice pipe to enjoy. My hats off to all you pipe smokers. Just great.
