So since the release of this years OPUS I got my hands on a couple and decided to try one before I went back to buy more just in case I didn't care for them. So this morning I had my breakfast, made myself a nice strong cup of joe and had my first Opus X. Perfection #4.

It was toothy and very well constructed. Very silky wrapper. Smelled milder than I expected. I was expecting a magical experience based on the hype but what did I find? I found it tasted just like any other Hemmingway with some spicyness added. It was strong...I'll give you that...I had a nice buzz from a smaller cigar but I would not go out of my way and then pay a whole bunch of extra cash for this. Was it good? Yes. Just not worth what they are getting for it. This is only my .02. I'm sure some of you are ready to flog me at this very moment. But that would defeat the purpose of a review forum. Not all reviews are positive. Would I smoke another? Sure. Would I pay the B&M prices? Nope.

I'll stand by you when the flogging starts. I don't like em either, but to each his own. We're just leaving more for others, LOL.

It's okay not to like a popular cigar. More for me.

Doc.

No flogging required; taste is a very subjective thing.

I think I had roughly the same reaction to my first one. But, as time passed and my tastes changed, I found the spice and complexity of the OpusX to be a very, very desirable thing. Sort of "grew into 'em" as it were. I have to tell you, though, they are not my "favorite" cigar....not sure if such a thing exists. Rather, between the Padron 64 / 26 line, the Fuente Anejo's, and the OpusX's, there are some completely different flavor profiles there that I enjoy depending on mood, beverage, etc. Then, of course there are smokes from this other island we often hear about....some interesting and fantastic stuff there as well, to be sure....

Try another in six months or so, and you tell us.....

Regards - B.B.S.

I was expecting a magical experience based on the hype

I smoked my first Opus X yesterday (also a perfecxion #4) and I had close to the same reaction. When I lit it up, it was too strong and spicy I almost put it down then. I'm not sure if it just got too hot at the beginning or not, but it seemed to mellow out as I got about 5 minutes into it then really started to enjoy it.

YOU CAN ALL SEND THEM TO ME.... :whistling: :whistling: :whistling:

Don't like Opus!??!!?

Mr. Mansueto you will kiss the gunner's daughter! Mr. Welch, take him below for the makings!

I've always wanted to use that...

I like Opus alright. They're not my favorite as they're a little strong nicotine-wise for me. With the Fuente premiums I prefer the Anejo now that I've actually had a couple of each.

Taste is always subjective. All shapes and sizes, Mike. All shapes and sizes...

:)

I am yet to try one.. Maybe next month
If they are anything like the God of Fire, or as you say, Like a spicy Hemingway I am sure my Cuban ridden taste buds will enjoy it.

Yeah, it was good, I was just not awestruck as I expected to be. I do have 2 more in the humi of different sizes...one is a double corona...I expect that might be much different.

Great flogging pic, BTW. I love the witty banter around here.

A key thing to remember when it comes to Opus, especially if you have not had one before is:

FRESH ONES SUCK!! ;)

I wonder how it will be with my first Opus...
Theyre resting, and waiting ...

HERE HERE! Had my first fresh about a year ago. Had my second last week form the same batch, NIGHT and DAY! Can't wait until another year gets on this,my first, batch!

x2. I always, always, always let my Opus' rest. The "freshest" one I have in my humi now (of the ones I picked up personally) are a minimum of 2 yrs old.

When I first started looking into non-Cuban cigars, I thought Fuente was king. After trying their stuff though, I've never really been impressed with anything except the Anejos.

More preparation then most guys put into their other first time... Seems about right.

That sucks, sorry to hear that. I have never had one but like the others said I will forsure let it rest. I cant wait to see what the hype is all about though. I am sure once it sits in the humi for few months it is a better smoke- all smokes are better after they age for a bit

i've never met an Opus i didn't like. I've had a box of Opus Robustos that i've had sleeping for about 6 months, not sure how much longer i can let that box keep it's virginity
